So, I went to the dealer to have some MINOR little things looked at and realized that my warranty has lapsed (only 35K). Has anyone purchased an extended warranty? My engine and transmission are warrantied for life from the dealer...is an extended warranty needed? After all , its a Toyota...

This is a serious question BTW...

I think your answer will either be a YES or NO.

Really, really read the fine print on extended warranties. Most are a scam, otherwise they wouldn't be in business. On some if you change your wheels or even tire size claims can be blocked. They also don't cover what you'd expect.

I got extra on mine from Toyota just because it’s an 18’ and the TSS and fancy head unit and whatever just felt like it may be worth for me if something like that ever messes up.

I’m generally the guy who downright refuses to buy warranty for anything, but for a few bucks more every week on the payment I figured it was a worthwhile investment on this.

I have been looking for an extended. I was quoted 4700 on one for an extra 60 months or 65k miles. Covers everything except wear and tear. Ive had other Toyota Dealerships quote me 2800 for a similar warranty. Problem is that they are through a third party company. I have researched the company (many Toyota dealerships use Fidelity). Many online reviews are pretty poor for Fidelity from what I read. It would really blow hard if you paid all that money to get claims denied due to bullshit fine print. Im leaning towards passing on an extended. Put those extra payments into a savings account. If you get to that point of 5 years and havent needed to make a claim... you just saved that money. If you need to pay outta pocket... its money you set aside for a warranty. Just my two cents and what I will probably end up doing. Or maybe put 5k towards a new 2020. :burnrubber:

Waste of money, that's where the dealerships make their money. But there could always be that one time you need it!

If they gave me a great deal on it at the time of purchase, then maybe I'd consider it... Buying it after you've driven the truck for 35k miles? Ehhhhhh... just pay for repairs as they come up.

Yup. Granted that was through an Autonation Dealership which I suppose is more expensive. But it would be one you could count on not to have any issues with claims, which clearly comes at a cost.

I also think that -- big picture, high level view -- you probably get better service as a paying customer than as the holder of an extended warranty. The extra scrutiny to try to exclude work, the cutting of corners to make it worthwhile. Just an extra headache.

Extended warranty’s are in my opion a waste of money. Dealers make lots of their money on up sells like this and paint guard on and on. If the truck won’t last more than three years i won’t buy one. There are tons of Taco’s out there with 300,000 miles and more.

I would just pay for the repairs unless you can get a super good deal. Outside of the TSS, other electronics are either drivetrain related, which you said were covered under a warranty from the dealer or pretty cheap to replace.

If you do go extended warranty, heavily consider going through Toyota. In my experience, third party companies will screw you every chance they get.

Poor guy in the leaky brake light thread had his regular warranty expire 2 weeks ago and is now stuck on the hook for all the interior water damage, seems like a Toyota extended warranty would have helped.

People win at the slots. A lot of money. I've seen it happen. I still know that when I slip a $5 in and I hit MAX BET, I just lost five bucks.

Agree with the factory Toyota extended warranty. 3 years extra from the new truck warranty. 2000 dollar range would be fair i think.
