I was chatting with a lodge brother last night about things we missed from the service, and I got all nostalgic for deployment base comm setup. Don't know why. I think it was the sense of accomplishment for what 7 guys could do in 48 hours without sleep, living on caffeine and MREs, desperately needing a nap and 10 minutes to drop a turd the size of Rhode Island, and suddenly having nothing to do because the airhead is built, planes are landing, and everyone can talk to everyone else.

I don't get that kind of "accomplishment high" anymore. There are damn few jobs that can do that, and I think it's one of the reasons I stayed in as long as I did.

I don't miss bad coffee and cheap beer, though. Fuck that shit - life's too short.

You shouldn’t. The nonsense I have seen on demo ranges, especially when we did breaching classes for IN or scouts was beyond ridiculous. Guys can’t even use Tannerite without almost killing themselves. I even seen a dumb ass e7 I was a platoon sergeants with blow three fingers off because he got careless.

We used to heat up our Coffee and C-Rations with a little pinch of C4...............I am old

 

I remember doing that. Always fun to see the new guys face when you ask him for a lighter so you can set some C4 on fire.

 

Yeah don’t do that... if only because the fumes are extremely toxic.

Last unit had a 2LT in a line company convince a guy it was a right of passage to ingest a bit. Guy has perm internal damage and almost died. Huge investigation into that one. That’s probably the only time I was glad I had the headquarters!

I have seen some very dumb 2LT but I never had one dumb enough to eat C4. It say's right on the claymore "for external use only"

 

Is there the risk of it exploding? Probably not. But the NCO in me cant like this.

Without a detonator small pieces - think a small corner when rolled and pressed flat is between the size of a nickel and a quarter - will burn.

As to eating it, I remember handling some and then wiping sweat off my brow and feeling sick later. Definitely use gloves.

 

Any explosive of any quantity will burn. Even PETN (det cord) burns. Just not a good habit or something to show/teach young troops to do. I know it was common(ish) in Vietnam to heat things but that’s a pretty big leadership failure, along with lots of other things done then and there.

It’s also a waist, just like my NCOs that did demo ranges when I was a joe. They just had us go down range to blow a single block of c4 to “certify” each year. It’s as bad as just burning ammo on a range vs actual marksmanship practice.

All my NCO's were in Korea and Nam. Great Guy's we were having a good time until the "fat Boy" program started getting rid of them.
