I found an independent shop near me thats owned by a former Toyota tech, they will be getting all the jobs I dont feel like doing from now on. They use Toyota parts too, right down to the oil filter.

Dealer techs are the newbs straight out of school probably 9 times out of 10. Id trust an independent mechanic more, and his prices will most certainly be lower. $550 for a brake job, when maybe $150 of that is parts is asinine.

I enjoy doing brakes. Find it theraputic to get out of the office. Unless they are drums. Drums can't get bent

General rule of thumb brakes last anywhere from 15k to 150k depending on driving habits and vehicle mods, 45k was probably the average when I was a tech.

did you notice because you periodically checked them or is there some kind of indicator that tells you the brakes need attention?

This is good to know since they are the closest dealer to me... though I would never really take my truck to the dealer...

I replaced my own calipers and put in upgraded brake lines, and it cost me about $300 in parts.

but since we're on the topic (kind of) of brake work costs...

Can anyone give me a estimate for how much it would generally cost to have someone flush out my entire brake system? including ABS, MC, and lines?

wondering because my brakes aren't as firm as I think they should be.
