not overpriced. check the marketplace for tunes on current platforms and you'll see it's below average in pricepoint. i spent $1500 for my Volvo's Polestar tune last month. Cobb for WRX is about $675 no options.

It's overpriced. I have the top tune ktuner on my 10th gen civic (most recent) it comes with a touch screen display that shows live data: boost, psi, internal temps, etc. Plus a button to switch tunes on the fly. Factory tune one second, performance the next. $599 for touch screen and multi on the fly tune option. Ovtune is archaic in comparison, still necessary though

    Edited my post.

Ktuner equivalent to ovtune with only the plug in is $449. Touch screen, have multiple tunes ready on the unit, duel tune, plus live data for $649

    https://ktuner.com/

$700 ovtune is way overpriced for the features. Should be $449 compared to other platforms

Most engines have little power below 2k rpms, unless its cummins diesel or something. Not sure what you trying to get at there.

Most of my driving is under 3k rpms and we have a lot of hills and it does just fine.

    To quote a TW genius.
“There is going to be a lot of guys with automatics, who probably never learned to operate a manual, definitely never drove one, saying how much manual sucks.
Then a bunch of guys with manuals saying how much they love it. “
Who do you want to listen to.

Also. If you’re crying about your 3rd gen Tacoma MT: honestly just sell it. You don’t deserve it.
Different manufacturers have very different clutches and transmissions.
So you likely just need to learn that vehicles clutch and transmission. It’s not geared like a sports car, it’s geared like a truck.

I agree the reverse is geared too tall. Other than that, it's fine if you know how to drive it. Not underpowered at all.

Not kidding if I drove stop and go every day I'd go with auto, but otherwise like most good things in life it rewards those who are willing to put in a little effort to learn how to use it.

Depends where you drive it man. I’ve been all across the states now — it sucks ass at altitude or very hilly places, as i stated. I had no drivability issues with it my first 7k miles in Alaska, mostly sea level

I /did/ just install OVtune’s FOB 87 and low end torque is much improved, though i’ve yet to test it at altitude
Curiously it has solved my sub-1k rattle, which i thought was trans knock but must have been spark knock. I actually got a lot of spark knock on factory tune if i ran 87, even though the manual says 87 is fine.

LOL. I have a 16 polestar as well. Just paid for the 40k service. Looked at the bill and picked up a Tacoma for daily driving. The polestar now sits on the far end of the garage coming out twice a week. Strangely I enjoy driving the Tacoma 6MT more than the polestar.

    you got it right.

my wife prefers a MT but there is no realistic MT option in the 3 row SUV category. 3 kids over here. so after we accepted the no-MT reality, the XC90 really stood out, and we're super happy with it. i drove it to CO and back in blizzard conditions last new year completely loaded down and the performance stood out. and still i will drive my Tacoma every chance i get.

Not to high jack a Tacoma forum with Volvo cars, however, I was loaned a XC90 T6 while the polestar was being serviced. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the 4 cylinder engine and transmission moved that big ass SUV. I dont fault you for getting an XC90, another kid at my end I may have to accept that reality as well, till then the V60P* and Taco6MT shall be the chariots while the wife drones around in her Rav4.

Instead of some expensive ass tune maybe y'all should get a driver mod. Learn to drive.

On the contrary. Anyone with legitimate understanding of how good engines and manual transmissions are supposed to work together will understand that Toyota has royalty screwed this up. The truck has virtually no Torque at low RPM which is an abomination for a truck. The tune seemingly makes that better so we are simply fixing toyotas clusterfuck and make an already enjoyable driving experience further such. I need my truck to be like a truck, torquey at the low end, I don't care for it to be making most of the power and Torque close to the red line and that too in a surge after 3.5-4k RPM. It's a fucking truck, not a Honda s2000.

Somewhat related but is there a reason that reverse is geared this way? Like a technical limitation of gear stuffing in transmissions I'm not aware of? Not just the Tacoma but a few other mt's I've driven had a reverse that's taller than first which to me makes no sense... there's never a reason I need to ever go that fast backwards. Unless I missed the backward towing competition invite...

I'd go auto. Because dealing with a LOT of snow with a stick not meaning/being there to play, is just not practical.
Stick is fun but I wouldnt want to be gear shifting in a pucker moment.

Also the abs brakes in these trucks suck in the snow from my understanding....
I've never had a real issue but then again I dont drive fast.

Damn that downshifting was wack lmao

    ---

I made the mistake of an AC automatic for the full bed and ability to share the truck. Fucking expensive mistake. Buy once cry once. Get the 6MT

Aside from the throttle response which will be tuned out shortly, the only other thing that really infuriates me is that the friction point is 1/2" from the top of the pedal. :frusty: I've ended up sliding the seat almost all the way back to be able to constantly drive smoothly. The driver side rear has pretty much turned into an AC for usable space....

If it were possible to move the friction point to midway or lower, I'd be smitten.

Hello fellow OR Cement Truck owner...you must agree we have the best-looking truck out there, amiright??

I have a little different perspective on the programming though. Maybe I would appreciate it more with a different tune, but IMO the truck does what it needs to...drives smoothly with low rpm at low speed in town and high speed on the highway, accelerates quickly when you put your foot to the pedal, and can pull strongly when you push down and keep it in a lower gear.

I haven't driven an S2000 in about a decade, but I think the Tacoma has a fairly linear power delivery compared to it--not as aggressive as some would like, I'll grant, but to mess with the basic formula means losing out on something, especially mpg. If it's speed you're going for, the Chevy Colorado Z71 is the winner there, and for low-end torque a diesel is more practical (though way slower!).

Anyway, over the last decade I have frequented forums for Mazda, BMW, Toyota and Subaru corresponding to my vehicles. EVERYBODY complains about the stock tune, literally everybody. But there's a reason for the design choices. I think you can have 2 of the 3 speed, power, or mpg, but having all 3 is like the holy grail--would require a turbo or somesuch modification. Which is where I think the Tacoma is headed, that or a hybrid.
