Local shop quoted me $350, I decided 40minutes of my time and $38 pads off Amazon were the better route for me. If I was a billionaire I'd probably just buy a new trd pro

I honestly believe I live in this area you’re talking about but without any snow. It’s October and every day still is 90+. Was 98 degrees today and actually going to set the record for most 90+ degree days in a single year this week. Not expected to be below 90 until Sunday.

Anyway I don’t do a lot of city driving but I do a ton of hauling trailers and very heavy loads. In fact many times overloaded by 1,000+ pounds easily. My 2019 is just barely over 7k now but my 2015 still had great pad and rotor life left when I traded it in with 88,000 miles. I specifically asked them if my brakes were any reason I got ‘x amount’ offered for trade in but only thing they discounted for was a tiny crack in brake light I didn’t even know was there. So small they even had to go back and ask the guy who did the inspection to come point it out because the dealer I was working with and the manager couldn’t see it.

Long drawn out yes but even city driving shouldn’t require new pads and rotors turned in less than 30k unless you’re the type of driver who can’t stay off someone’s bumper far enough that every time they brake you have to brake very hard to keep from hitting them.

Really like this second guy. Was honestly thinking something along the same lines when I saw a city dweller say a ‘country boy’ wouldn’t last. I’ve lived in Lansing Michigan, East Lansing Michigan, altlanta Georgia, Marietta Georgia, Dallas Georgia, all sucked. Now I live in Haleyville Alabama and love it. 90% of my life in the country because the other 10% I felt like a lot of my life was wasted. 2+ hours to drive 15 miles 5 days a week, you can have it. 30 stops to go to closest grocery store or whatever store, no thanks. Love the small town life where folks know who you are and know your family. These folks look after you and you look after them. Haven’t locked my house or my vehicles or my garage anywhere but the city. Wouldn’t change it for the world. Also lived in another small town in Michigan that had a newspaper clipping posted on the window. Clipping said ‘no sense in using a blinker, we already know where you’re going’. Good feeling to walk into a store or school event and literally 80%+ of those people know you and care about you. Never get that in a city life.

Some of you guys are silly about this. If you wanna pay for good service go for it. It’s only money. And where I am in California, I bring home more money per hour than I would pay a dealer +parts. So I loose money when I take time to do my own brake job! Every situation is different.

As electric cars capture more market share the need for maintenance, like brakes, will go down. The regenerative braking cuts WAY down on brake pad wear. With some electric cars you can almost coast to a stop and apply very little braking. I can personally verify this after borrowing a Tesla Model S for a weekend.

This is the mentality I’m taking about.
I’m not putting it down I genuinely find it romantic.
But life is bigger than 9-5 Monday through Friday living for the weekend where you change oil and wash laundry.

I agree with everything you said, except for the bold part. Just because you go to a dealership, it doesn't necessarily mean they always know what they do. A buddy of mine went to the dealership with his Subaru to change the oil, just a few hours before he was supposed to leave for a camping trip. The dealership "specialist" stripped his oil pan bolt, and he lost one day of vacation until they fixed it.

Just last week a guy at work got quoted $800 for brake pads and rotor resurfacing on his Camry, at Toyota in Irvine. I know his car real well, the rotors don't need to be touched. I told him to buy the pads and come by on Saturday.

I hear you. People can only be fully human with real freedom, and not 9-5 Mon-Fri voluntary imprisonment.

Here’s my take, nothing personal to anyone.

    1. Time value
If you value your time and make enough money that you can afford it, I honestly think it’s better to pay someone. Why? Not because you’re better or more wealthy or don’t want to get dirty. But if someone does all their own work, many many others wouldn’t have a job. On top of that, the man who has enough money to pay for it doesn’t make the man doing the job inferior. I build homes for living and can proudly say I do a good job. However I don’t want to build houses for a living and then come home and work on my home in my spare time. That’s where people mistake it often that others are too ‘whatever’ to do their own tasks. Yes brakes are easy and don’t take long but oh well.

    2. Task enjoyment.
Some folks literally love wrenching period. They’ll work all day then go home and stay in the garage til midnight or later only to see their wife when she brings him supper in garage or kids when they’re not being annoying and get to come in and be daddy’s helper. Many variants possible here but honestly some folks love doing this.

Could go on and on and on. If you can afford it and want to, you’re doing your community a service because you could be a tight wad and never even go out to eat either and horde all the money you make while in turn if many others did this then many many small businesses would fold. Then without competition bigger businesses could drive prices how they want making it dang near impossible to afford to live even on a middle class income.

Let folks spend how they choose. Problems come when we try to tell others how to spend or how to live.
