Never thought I'd buy an extended warranty since, myself like many of us have most of the tools, code readers and know how but, the vehicles of today are not your Dads 1970 Chevy Nova tech. I negotiated from $2250.00 (?) down to 1600.00 for a ten year bumper to bumper.

I've got an 8yr 125K bumper to bumper from Toyota. It's awesome that you already have a lifetime powertrain warranty. With all the electronics on these vehicles and being a newer gen, the piece of mind for knowing I'm covered just in case is worth it to me.

I will be honest an say my 2017 had a lot of issues with the rear end and was bought back by the dealer who swapped me into a 2018. Toyota corporate gave me the extended warranty for my troubles (I would've purchased it anyway given my experiences with my 2017)

No Sir, YOUR logic fits YOUR life and YOUR ways!! No one said it wasn't a gamble. That was my whole point. It's the same as medical insurance for your life. You only need when you do. If you're rich and can afford to drop any payment at any time to fix your truck or your body...Well then fuck it. I guess YOU don't need the warranty or insurance, But, if you're poor and can't handle the $3500 for a cracked new windshield (like me) for the 2018 Tacoma you just bought or "one" is not a full on modern Automotive Technician it's way better to pay small amounts over a longer period. & not to mention....My payment was lower with the warranty. I'm 46 with numerous vehicles over the years and I have always used the Ext. Warranty at least once not to mention to keep up on all services easily.....but like you said to each his own. I will gladly pay a little longer and more over a longer period of time.

Ok. I guess I’m confused. Your original post says you have 35k.

I don't understand why people would pay 4,700 to buy an extended warranty on a lightly used tacoma. Wouldn't it be cheaper and way less hassle to trade it in and buy a brand new one?

    None... yet.
My dealer offered me the 100k Toyota SuperPremiumAwesomeWhatever warranty for like $1500 when I bought the truck. I was tempted, just for peace of mind on the electronics and computer shit, but I held off. The finance guy was very low-pressure and wasn't bullshitting, he did say that the warranty isn't all-encompassing. Like if the techs determine that a part under warranty got ruined by a failure in a part that isn't under warranty, they'll deny the warranty claim.

And that's always kind of been my take on extended warranties. They are really good at saying they cover almost every expensive piece on the truck... but the fine print always lays out pretty comprehensive ways to deny claims. In talking with a couple of buddies, both who work at a shop that works exclusively on Hondas and Toyotas, both said that their experience is that it's not worth it. Their take was basically: "we've worked on countless cars that were still under "extended warranty" because customers brought the vehicles to us after Toyota told them the problem wasn't covered under the extended warranty." Plus my plan was always to either do my own repairs or take the truck to them as soon as my ToyotaCare runs out anyway. I've got more faith in myself and those two than I do the techs at the dealer.

All that said, there's still a part of me that thinks for under $2k, it's worth the gamble, because if it pays for even one replacement parking sensor or radar unit or something, it's basically paid for itself. But then I think of how fucking irate I'll be if I ever walk into the dealer and they tell me a $5k claim on a piece of computer tech that's covered under the warranty is being denied because somebody decided the fault was in a $10 non-warrantied wiring harness or something.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

$4,700!?!? Mine was $2200 bumper to bumper. No, it'd be smarter to sell it privately and not get 50% less on a trade in from the dealer. The warranty or Insurance for that matter isn't ONLY about the vehicle. It's about YOUR life and your day to day. Are you single or do you have a family?! Are you an adept well versed mechanic that has a lot of free time?! Is it your ONLY vehicle!? Do you have endless cash on hand to use at your disposal in case of repairs or a collision?! You will always find the" Fuck that Pussy Ass Warranty Shit, My Shit Never Breaks Down And I Will Fix It All Myself" type of guys. These same guys probably don't have health insurance either.

This seems to be the target price for that top end Platinum package and IMO it's a good investment for someone who doesn't have the knowledge, space, or skills. Despite being a former ASE master tech, I picked up the same warranty at the same price just because I don't have the space to work on my truck at home and have to reply on tech day meetups.

Grabbed a creeper when I got home, rolled underneath from front to back, opened the hood then said to myself, I made the right decision buying the extended especially, since I plan on keeping this long term.

Did the dealerships warranty tell you that a new windsheild is 3500? Thats part of the problem dealerships drum up the cost of things to the point where the warranty seems feasable. windsheild is $200 man, that warranty isnt looking so good with realistic prices.

I've heard a lot of things in this post that are training points to pressure people to sign up for the warranties. Yet when you look at how an extended warranty company is designed and the fact that they can make so much profit, it's going somewhere. And it isn't in the favor of the consumer I can tell you that.

Yep, they did that to me... brake job is 400 dollars, oil changes yada yada yada. Difference is i dont bite on hard sells especially when i know how much i spent on doing my own maintenance. its shocking that im hearing the same pitch on a site that has DIY post on how to do most of what they are paying 50+% more for.
