There seems to be a lot of variability between the P-Metric size and the actual dimensions. Some tires are closer to 31’s in 265/75/16 (265/70/17) and some are close to 32’s. Although it is not perfectly accurate the 265=31ish / 275=32ish / 285=33ish mostly works, but clearly not in all cases.

I think you’re downsizing your “generally considered“ sizes. Tires are normally rounded up. This is even true for many flotation sizes. Some 31x10.5x15 are as small as 30.2”.

Most people consider stock sizes 31s.

    265/75r16 and 265/70r17 are 32s. Most range from 31.6 to 31.9.

    275/70r17 are a tall 32 at just over 32”.

    285/75r16 and 285/70r17 are 33s. They normally range from 32.6 to 32.9.

The skinny’s from each category are usually a few 1/10s taller but still referred to in their respective categories.

I know tiresize.com rounds them down to the next inch, which is annoying. It’s simple math rules, .5 and up goes up, .4 and down goes down.

Sure. Whatever floats your boat I am good with. Where I live, on subjects like tire size, if you are not there, you are not there. A 265/75/16 or 265/70/17 BFG k02 starts life at 31.6 inches. It only gets smaller from there with wear, and if you air down at all, shorter still.

I think calling a 31.6” tire a 32” is punching above your weight class, but that’s not really what this thread is about. People I know call the size I run a ‘31’, but of course, we are all wrong, because it is a truly a 31.6” tire, and next year it will be a 31.4” tire and so on.

Really cutting hairs here... who really cares? +/- .5"... Just wheel your rig on the tires you like.

I agree. It really doesn’t matter. When I originally read your first post I thought you were talking stock size. Then people were chiming in with stock size then 265/75. It was just hard to follow for a minute there.

But I’m with you. I was shopping to bump up from 265/75/16 to 285/75. Then I realized the benefit is minuscule and the detriment is pretty big. Most folks that think they need a 285 would probably be be better off with a 265 and some better skid protection. But skid plates don’t look as cool on IG. Real life is about the total package.

imo any off road package for an off road oriented truck/suv should come with 33's from the factory. That goes for the TRDOR/TRD Pro, ZR2, Ranger FX4 etc etc... but that's probably a discussion for a different thread...

Well, if you could point out a midsize pickup that comes with 33’s from the factory (maybe Jeep Gladiator?), I’m all ears. Even a stock Australian spec. 2019 Landcruiser 79 comes from the factory with 30” radials (265/70/16) in the GXL civilian trim. The best tire size offering out there in a midsize pickup is Nissan, which fits the Pro4 Frontiers with 265/75/16 (31s).

Re-read my post. I never said any of them did. It's my opinion that they should for trucks that are advertised as off road capable. For fuck's sake Toyota doesn't even provide proper off road tires on the 3rd gen TRDOR's LOL. I know the engineers at Chevrolet thought the ZR2 should have been sold with 33's from the factory but the bean counters didn't allow it. Just look at the number of people that upgrade to 33's in the aftermarket. If it was factory supported, it would be awesome from a capability stand point. You can't argue that.

It’s all relative to the size of the vehicle you take off-road. A full size truck, yes 33s at a minimum. My ATV has lockers and only 25” tires and does better off-road than most any truck.

If Tacoma’s came with 33s and still met factory specs and durability they would be completely redesigned beefed up front ends and would cost another $15k. Not to mention they would need new gears and transmission mapping. Price just went up again and now EPA ratings are shit so it needs a new power train to meet government standards. All this for the collective 0.1% of the time off-road packaged trucks leave the pavement.
.......yep, a discussion for another thread.
However they could probably stand to put a slightly more aggressive all terrain in 265/75/16 on at least the Pro.

I'll just ignore these made up numbers and the anecdotal shit...

But I'll wholeheartedly agree with you here.

Well I wasn’t trying to write a published journal paper. Just a slightly exaggerated example to make a point. Not everyone on TW believes they are typing absolute facts with every word.

But......FACT: My atv really does have 25” tires.

Just put 265 75 16 Cooper AT3 4S’s on my 2018 OR. It’s great so far; no difference in ride or MPG, and they fill out the wheel well better than stock size.

The only thing is, I wish I had the funds for a set of 17 inch wheels. From what I found, 265 70 17 (same size) had some of the more aggressive tires, like the KO2, Duratrac, and grabber ATX in lighter loads like P or C. Think my next set of tires will be that size, but performance wise, no complaints.
