This whole paying players for their likeness is going to be a hell of a slippery slope, but in all reality can we stop acting like these top d1 athletes are struggling in life at college? I worked for a "small" school and our basketball players got treated like royalty...catered meals after practices, coaches would take them out for all the time, free housing, free tuition, stipends, all the gear they wanted in the world etc. Not to mention all the under the table money that gets tossed around to begin with. But it's already an arms race behind the scene but now it's gonna be all out in the open...just wait till kids are a bust at college after making $$$ on likeness you think the people who trash college kids for not performing well now are bad lol

Yeah, the NCAA historically has always been a little out of touch with the groups that make them money.

However, the NCAA is an amateur arena, that happens to make big bucks. Adding compensation makes it at a minimum semi-professional.

As an athlete, you can ONLY be there for an average of 4 years. There is a restriction to how long you can play at that level. Not the same with semi-professional sports in other leagues (MLB, NBA, PGA).

It also seems that with the growth of CFB and CBB, we've lost the fact that these kids are supposed to be there for an education first, sports second. I understand that requirements from the Pro's to be out of high school for so many years to even be considered for the league pushes kids to college, but there is a TON of growth for these kids at this level that prepares them for a career in the NFL specifically. Whether that growth be emotional, mental or physical, most of these kids wouldnt survive in the NFL without at least 2 years of development.

I get that some kids are just monsters like Jadaveon Clowney. He was a man child and probably could have made it in the NFL, but for how long? Clowney in the NFL as an 18-19 year old kid going up against full grown MEN who have been in the league a couple of years? Even with him being so physically advanced for his age, where was he emotionally? Mentally? One good bell ringing and you might have a larger, more violent Antonio Brown running around doing crazy stupid stuff.

There isnt a minor league for the NFL. There just isnt. It's college.

Honestly, it's better this way, I feel, because minor league baseball players make about $40,000 - $60,000 a year....

College athletes are invested in, developed, mentored and trained to be successful with a full right scholarship that aids in their education as a human. The cost of each NCAA football player is well over that of $40,000-$60,000 a year for the scholarship, clothing, food, housing, medical care, etc. (I think this argument is usually shot down...but...when you compare it to the minor league options for other sports....it holds a lot of weight.)

Not even close... those guys make pennies it's all living off signing bonuses till you're in the league.

The average salary for a minor league baseball player, whose contract is handled by Major League Baseball, ranged from around $6,000 in Single-A to around $9,350 in Double-A to nearly $15,000 in Triple-A in 2018, according to The Athletic. Those wages cover only the months of the regular season. Players are not paid during spring training or in fall leagues.

Weird, did they change it within the last 20 years?

We had a minor league player that lived in our neighborhood during the season...he made about $35,000 a year playing baseball....said it was peanuts and he had to pick up temp jobs to support himself.

Maybe he had a good signing bonus and averaged it out or was on a team that pays better (i think the blue jays pay decent in minor leagues)? But yeah I was an intern for a High A ball team and got paid minimum wage, worked 65 hours a week, made more than the guys who were playing.

    Gotcha.

That was back when I was pretty young. So, then I was like "Holy cow, he plays baseball and gets PAID."

Now I'm like, "Shit, $40k a year isnt enough to get me to run the bases..."

"This is the silliest s**t I've ever seen in my life." Well buddy you're a mediocre coach with a terrible record over the past 2 years...this ain't bama/FSU where they sweep shit under the table and have special treatment, Gotta think ain't no cop risking his job for your crappy team.
