The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

That recommendation by ECGS is baseless without used oil analysis of both types of oils. And why are they recommending specifically Lucas dino gear oil when there are many other quality conventional gear oils?

Back when synthetic gear oils started being offered many large truck fleets switched over to synthetic gear oils after extensive testing and comparisons. Some truck fleets were hesitant to use synthetic gear at first due to the higher cost but in the long run most switched due to the longer drain intervals and increased fuel savings. Heavy truck differentials were retrofitted with temp monitors and always ran cooler with synthetic gear oil when towing heavy loads up long grades.

So if heavy equipment holds up better with synthetic gear oil why would a Toyota differential be any different???

 

That's not what Nitro recommends. And specific reason? Way too viscous in the colder states. Maybe synthetic 75W-140, I would consider. Nitro says use the viscosity Toyota recommends as I recall.

Curious why you say that, and why you’d take a stance against their recommendation. Are you basing this from experience? What is that experience? Are you in the industry?

 

Of course. Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt. I have no problem going a bit more viscous than recommended (hence the 75W-110) . On the cold end it's inefficient and can cause excess wear, plus on the hot end too viscous will actually run hotter. But yes there are some heavy differentials that need 75W-140 or even SAE 250. I am not seeing the need here.

 

What exactly is their recommendation for the Nitro gear set?

Yes. My degree is in chemistry, but I now work at a small rocket engine factory and have sold gear oils for 20+ years.

 

I am not telling anyone what to use. Use what you want. I am installing the Nitro gears and ARB air locker and trying like hell to extract the best selection. Has anyone asked Amsoil TS or Redline?

 

Nitro has been behind the curve on a lot of things, they don’t understand Cryo, they don’t understand REM, in fact they don’t even understand gearing as they thought 5.29 was too low for the Tacoma. I doubt Nitro has ever even done a study on oil. They manufacture steel parts, nothing more. I’d hardly take their advice on anything other than basic steel manufacturing.

Diffs are pretty bulletproof, you can run whatever you want in it but 85-140 is preferred by consumers and many companies.

And I don’t have anything against those guys. I have their gears they work perfect. And to be fair they probably get most of their data from us through consumer feedback but I was very disappointed when I spoke to them. Things may have changed since then. Idk

I have a manual transmission with a flatbed or wheel camper and I have 5.29s. I’m quite happy otherwise only put 500 miles on it since

 

My truck will be in Corvallis over the weekend of October 5 and 6th. It has 5.29’s but only 32 inch tires and is super heavy

 

Maybe this might help. This is taken from the ARB USA website FAQs,

WHAT DIFFERENTIAL OIL IS REQUIRED FOR ARB AIR LOCKERS?

We recommend following your vehicle users manual for the quality and viscosity. We DO NOT suggest any oils with limited-slip additives as they can shorten the life of the ARB Air Locker seals.
