Looking for some advice on which tire I should choose. I have narrowed down my options to 3 tires in 2 different sizes. I am looking at:

    General ATX in 265/75/16

    Yokohama X-AT in 265/75/16

    Cooper ST MAXX in 255/85/16

So now that I have presented the options here is the deal, my truck is a 4 cylinder RC. Obviously that makes this a little more complicated. I am currently running the stock steel wheels and a set of 245/75/16 crap highway tires the previous owner put on. The tires weigh 41lbs and the stock steel wheels weigh 32lbs. So I’m at 73lbs per corner. I have already purchased a set of SCS F5 that weigh 18lbs and all the tire options above weigh approximately 53lbs so my total weight will essentially be unchanged.

So it boils down to do I want 33’s or 32’s, and are 33’s too much tire for my truck. A regear is an option, however not until next year when I have time to save up some money.

Also, out of the 3 tire options which would be your choice? My typical off-roading is forest roads and desert washboards. And I do about 1-2 snow trips each year. Some rocky terrain as well, but I don’t do rock crawling. My daily driving involves very very little highway, but obviously it takes a lot of highway driving to get to camping destinations.

Another factor is that the ST MAXX in 255/85 are expensive! At discount tire they are $245 per tire vs $199 for the X-AT and $174 for the ATX.

I’d try to find some choices in C load for around 45lbs. C is pretty tough for most situations.

I have thought a lot about C load. The only good tires though are the Cooper AT3 or the Duratracs. I’ve had the AT3 on my F-150, and they were great tires but I’m looking for something a little more aggressive. I also have roughly 600 lbs constant load in my truck bed, so I’m thinking E rated might hold up better in the long run off road.

I bought a set of 265/70/17 STT Pro on factory 4Runner Trail wheels and lost 3 mpg.

I hated it. So off they came and the OEM went back on.

You might not lose as much mpg and you might be very happy with whichever tire you choose - but you won't know for sure until you try.

All three tires you are looking are solid choices depending on your needs. If we can help please let us know.

(DIY)...Fog lights, alloys, wheelwell liners, tonneau, frame cleanup & rustproofing, floor mats, trailer hitch.
I'd go with Coopers for their price/reliability and avoid General's for their crappy customer service. Falken Wildpeak's are also a possibility if a tread warranty isn't a priority and you don't care about white sidewall lettering.

I’ve been relooking into C load tires and am leaning towards that. The load ratings are more than enough for my Tacoma. I just wish there were more choices!

I’m leaning towards the Cooper AT3, the redesigned sidewalls look really good, and I was impressed with them on my F-150.

They are a good allround tire for sure, I saw an older tire test for AT tires and the AT3 won the overall. The new version does look good.

I have 235/85r16 general grabber at2's on my RC. Load range E. It is an incredible tire, and has really never let me down. That being said, my acceleration and mpg's went to shit when I put them on. I regret nothing.

Really, even with a 235 tire? I considered that size to decrease the rolling resistance but I already have the 16x8's which is too wide a wheel for 235's. Hopefully LRC and the 265's aren't too bad, I don't have much acceleration as it is. I thought about running two sets of tires but the hassle of switching back and forth, dealing with the TPMS sensors, and extra wear on my hubs is keeping me from doing that.

Less weight would be much better with a weak 4cyl

You will be getting your money's worth for the extra cost on the ST Maxx's! Great tires, I have had them on two vehicles and no complaints, tough, and had the best tread wear of any tires I've ever had.

When I had a 4cyl reg cab 4x4 I ran 235's and then 265's on it, the mileage hit was minimal and well worth it for the performance and durability of quality tires. I also feel like people here seem to have missed the fact that you are dropping 13lbs a corner with your new wheels. Ignore the E load haters, their speech is pretty weak and likely based on web wheeling.

I did, which is why pointed out the fact that ppl seemed to be missing the fact that you already had the lightweight wheels. Posts abovr have dummies telling you to get light tires and blah blah. Good job reading on your part. Congrats on being so bright!
