All the prices in my head are 20 years old. I’m surprised at a gallon of milk.

Guess NY prices are vastly different from other areas. Not surprised though.

Maybe that's that, or we're getting screwed a bit...
Anyways, I just picked up an used one (came out of 2017 with 30K on it) from junkyard in NJ for $200. Which was a great deal, maybe even a fluke.
You could get a good used shaft for $300-400, which is pretty much a price of a re-tub in our area.

$200 seems like a great deal. I've seen a few from junkyards that sell online for over $600. For $400 I think I'd be better off with the retube. At least it will be a stronger tube than stock this time.

    Yes, totally!

I'm not sure about my retube. It was done through my employer's account, so I'm not sure if I've gotten shorter end of the stick with them replacing extra things and billing my company :notsure:

Holy crap that's cheap compared to mine. Just so I'm comparing apples to apples, what exactly do people on here mean when they say retube. What I am having done is remove the shaft at the rear flange at the rear diff, and slide the shaft off at the slip joint behind the carrier bearing. From there he is going to weld in a new u-joint at the rear for me onto a new tube and have splines in the front for the slip joint. Is that what you mean too?

    Is the rear U-Joint bad?

If they are installing a joint/flange, that could be your cost.

When I mean re-tube, it’s just the DOM between the joint and splined ends.

Thats a retube job allright. Lots of machine shops here due to shipyards. $400 retube? not in my back yard.

U-joint is still good to my knowledge. I think I misspoke, he is going to reuse my u-joint. I remember he saying he was going to use a lathe to mill down the joint to fit into the new tube. So yeah, he is doing exactly what you'd call a re-tube. Apples to apples, and sounds like I'm getting the shaft here...

    Update:

Yesterday I picked up the newly re-tubed driveshaft. Total cost was $400 even cash. He did install a new u-joint.

Once I got it installed, I struggled to get the new clamp for the boot attached. Eventually I mangled it up and I am going to Toyota to buy a new one today. In the mean time I installed a solid zip tie that has metal teeth to keep the boot attached. If anyone has any tips for getting those dang clamps on please let me know. I must have spent a combined five hours between last night and today trying to get it, only to mess it up in the end.

The new shaft has zero wobble. I attached my go pro to jack stand and ran in the truck with the wheels off the ground. I wanted to upload videos but the upload was going to take too long. I did this same thing with the old shaft before I removed it too. With the old shaft the runout was obvious. Now, the shaft is spinning true with no noticeable runout. Thanks to all who offered advice and help!

Looks good. Wonder if the 3rd gens have different sized Ujoints? The 2nd gen Spicer Ujoints have external grease fittings, looks like yours has internal

Do you have the tool for the Toyota clamp?
Did you lube the slip spline? Ford XG8 is the grease you want for that.
