Changing differential fluid - A step by step "HOW TO"

2009 double cab taco. automatic 2wd.

i used 3 qts Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-140. Works wonderfully!

Used Mobil 1 80-90W. Works like a charm. Thanks again Chris.

 

NOTE: 09 dosnt have a LSD in the rear...

 

Well, that clears that up ! I used Mobil 1 LS. They told me it was OK but I didn't know it didn't have LS additive. Thanks.

 

Thanks for the great write up of changing the rear diff oil! I used to do all my own work but lately gotten a bit lazy, this inspired me to DIY!

BTW dlr wants $59 to do this. I did it for ~$20 and 20 min, and I'm sure they don't use Synthetic.

I used 2 qts Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS

$26 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 ('00 2WD non-LS).

This oil went in very easy, I warmed it for 10 minutes in a pail of hot water, just passing that old trick along if anyone does it while it's cold (not that it is cold now).

I just read 32 pages of this DIY...and it reads part like a service manual...part like a novel...and part like a reality show. LOL

I only have 2100 miles on my SR5 Tacoma...and I can't wait to tackle these gear oil changes.

I also have 2 years/25K miles maintenance included with the truck...but I'm still gonna do this myself. I love it! I've already changed the motor oil with Mobile-1 and a new YZZD3.

OK...I'm somewhat confused...

I checked and my rear-end has a C3 sticker and no LSD sticker.

However my window sticker says I have "Auto LSD"

Can someone clarify???

man that fill plug is a bitch to get off huh??? howcome it has oil on the back side the whole time i got it fianly after 10 min of cussing at it that always helps... ill do the front tomorrow. does anyone know if you can squeeze the oil in out of the bottle or do you need a pump??

 

I just soaked both the fill plug and drain plug with a little wd-40 a day before I removed them and they came out with little effort.

 

I need a quick answer here guys .. hopefully someone is online that can answer this. For the rear diff I filled it till I saw gear oil coming out the fill cap then put the cap on .. waited and came back and filled it till it came out again.

My question is.... Do I use the same fill method for the front diff and transfer case????
