Meh OEM is fine. CVJ doesn’t warranty their stuff anyway

Replaced the 3 fan belts on my 2.7L yesterday. Original belts from the factory 17 years ago. Old ones were starting to show small cracking and light edge fray. Better now than being stranded on some back road in the dead of winter and no cell signal. Whent to start engine and battery had only 8volts= 2 dead cells. 8 year old battery. Started walkin down the road with the core to exchange and the first passing motorist stopped to assist by taking me to Advance and back with the new battery. Country life is good!

Welp I got under the truck to see how my passenger side boot was doing since I replaced it not long ago and so naturally I checked the driver side

Well... time to do it while it’s fresh in my memory and before that tears since it’s wet and nasty here in Seattle

Got a set from Summit and same thing happened. I figured there would be some kind of coating on them or something, but nope.

Gonna reboot my OEM ones to have as spares for when I inevitably break these....

Good to know, was only interested in them for their high angle boots but I don't want to spend that much and not have any consumer protection on it.

Saw that most dealer parts departments carry OEM remans for 1/2 - 1/3 the price of new OEM axles so I think I'm going to try those next. Have you used the reman OEM ones before?

Just wrap the shaft in electrical tape or something, lol. It doesn't look that bad...the green on the OEM shafts isn't paint it's a decal if I remember right. I remember it was peeling off on one of mine original ones.

Their boots are really nice I’ll give em that. I haven’t tried reman but they’re supposed to be OEM. I’d just scower t dub and junk yards for em. I have really good luck finding spare parts off junkyard third gen t4rs. I have CVJs on the truck now but I have 2 OEM spares so I probably won’t replace the CVJs with new ones once they break again. Nice boots aren't worth $350 a side without shipping

yea it doesn't bug me and it's not like it's causing any problems, but figured i'd chime in.

I believe you are right that the shaft is simply covered with a decal on the OEM CVs.

It was like $70 from AutoZone...they were the only shop that was open past 9pm last night unfortunately

Weirdly that Duralast axle was a bitch to get in the diff last night, where the OReilleys one practically just slid in by hand (C clip facing down on both).

I had to hammer the end of the Duralast one to get it to finally pop in. I learned the hard way last year not to do that without the axle nut on the end of the shaft.

    What happened?

I had this happen when a local shop "forced" in the axle when a seal was changed out.

...It turns out, we were at a spot in the trail where a spring kept the trail wet, and spinning tires on a clay-rich wet road kept the trail dug out and flexy. A spot where every last one of us would three-wheel it as we attempted to make it through...

I booger'ed the threads on the end of the axle and was pressed for time to get my truck road worthy for a 400 mile road trip the next morning, so I made the ill-fated decision to just zip the axle nut on there anyway (it cross threaded of course) and as a result there was a tiny bit of play allowed because the axle nut wasn't completely seated all the way. Of course I didn't figure that part out until I got to my destination the next day and my wheel bearing nearly gave out. With limited tools and very limited time (I was getting married the next day), I had to take it to the nearest shop for repairs. New wheel bearing, new CV and new rotor...and nearly $1000 poorer than I was before.

So yeah...I learned a few valuable lessons from that DIY experience.

The shop broke the C-clip on yours it looks like? How were you able to get the broken pieces out? Seems like that would be a nightmare

    Yikes on your story!

So I thought the seal was busted again, I ordered a new OEM axle and went to my buds house to replace it.
I got the axle out of the diff and was looking for the c-clip on the end of the "bad axle" and there wasn't one!

I looked in the diff housing and sure-as-shit, there it was! I fished it out with my fingers! I made sure I had all the pieces by putting it back together as best possible. I have also replaced the diff fluid shortly after the axle replacement.

The drivers side front axle on my 1st gen is a love/hate relationship....

Haha yeah mine too...I've had to replace that one at least 4 times, the passenger side I've only ever had to do once.
