I don't have my RTT yet but in reading trip reports and thinking about it I am going to go with passenger side.

There doesn't appear to be any benefit to which way it opens for actually using it but it seems like they sometimes need some mid afternoon sunlight drying time if put away wet in the morning, and if it opens passenger side you could park on any street and open it up and leave it for an hour to dry. If it opens driver side then you could't do that since it'd be protruding into traffic.

If you are always in the middle of nowhere then I think it's irrelevant which way it opens, but we find ourselves in cities often on multi day trips and it would be convenient to be able to pop it up to dry and walk to get lunch nearby or whatever.

...It turns out, we were at a spot in the trail where a spring kept the trail wet, and spinning tires on a clay-rich wet road kept the trail dug out and flexy. A spot where every last one of us would three-wheel it as we attempted to make it through...

which one did you end up getting? i've used the tent like 4 times already, and no complain so far.. i like the materials they used as well cos they seem pretty durable, similar materials to the top branded ones out there.

I got a great deal on a new FSR M49.

Although after using a few times we have decided to look for a larger one. Still going to use and keep the M49, but maybe get an iKamper or something like that.

when i had a clamshell style RTT, i always had it fold out on passenger side. partly for the times I thought I might park on the side of the trail, it would keep it out of the main trail, though I never did it. The other part of is that I have my fridge in the back behind the driver's seat and because of that, I usually have my clothes and other stuff on the rear passenger seat. Having the tent open passenger side made it quicker and easier to get to my clothes and other stuff in the cab (vs having to climb around the fridge).

Good call. I went with the Nomadic 2 from Overland Vehicle System because they're just so much cheaper than the name brands and they're located near LA, so I was able to get a discount by picking it up at their warehouse instead of shipping.

That's a great point. Hopefully not spending too many nights broken down on the side of the road, but do plan on doing a lot of camping along old fire roads around southern California.

...And then, a trip-changing discovery. As we were wrapping up photos in this exact location - and frankly, as Mike was likely wondering how he could get around us so that he didn't have to put up with our shenanigans - I happened to glance down between the spokes of my rear driver-side wheel... and what I saw took the air out of my sails.

I have a brand new grey Tepui Ayer cover in my garage. If anyone wants it, DM me. My asking price is shipping and whatever amount you think is fair.

Alright, one of my straps finally bit the dust. I guess last time I didn’t tighten it enough. So how is everyone replacing/upgrading theirs?

So I went and picked up my RTT from Overland Vehicle Systems this past Friday. A few things: the people there are absolutely wonderful. Appeared to be a family owned shop, and when they heard I was planning to go straight into the mountains after picking up the tent, they put it together for me and had it waiting to put on my bed bars the moment I arrived to their warehouse.

I really have no negatives about this tent. A list of highlights I thought others would like to know listed below:
    • The Nomadic 2 sleeps 2 comfortably (and could fit 3 if you squeezed).
    • Has a skylight which is pretty cool feature (not only for air ventilation, but you can also look at the stars on a clear night).
    • Extras that came with the tent:
      • 2 shoe holders
      • A cell phone holder
      • An additional storage loft pouch that hangs inside the tent to hold clothes and extras
      • Two pillows (kinda hard, but hey they were free)
      • A small dust pan and broom
      • Stakes and paracord
      • 40" LED Light Strip that plugs into standard USB
      • Handheld USB light with hanger
      • Floor mat
    • To add to all of that, the tent comes with a 4-year warranty, which is much longer than most I have seen in the market.
    • For under $1000, I feel like this tent is a steal, and seems to be as well made as any of the name brand RTTs. Maybe I'm just naive, but we will see how well the tent holds up over the coming trips.
    • Great people + great price = happy camper

Photos from my first trip below (the gf wanted to camp at an actual campground for our first try with the RTT, but we will be doing a lot of dispersed camping over the coming months) -
