dorman oil filter cap issues

    Bought and installed metal filter cap 1st week of september. changed oil for 1st time then at 5k . This week got call at home from fellow tech to check my vehicle, left large puddle of oil in shop. Had left taco running while I cleaned bugs off ws before going home for the day. Sure enough found approx 2 quarts low because of filter leaking. Was 35ft lbs tight as was drain bolt at filter , when I removed it today to put original plastic back on. No nicks on o rings, housing at engine smooth. Compared to original housing cap, appears large O ring more flush on metal cap than the one on the original cap. No oil leaks since reinstalled original one. I Am a 40 year GM tech and I ALWAYS check my oil changes running after I do LOF . Did not see any oil leaks on garage floor then and drove at least 500 miles, until I got back home yesterday when received call from fellow tech. Filter appeared to be leaking around the large screw thread area where cap meets housing . Guess I'll stick with original parts, now to seek refund from Advance auto parts .

    I think I got my OEM metal cap for about 15 bucks. Never had an issue.

    Everything was installed right and correct filter. Even double checked after. I put back on the plastic cover. Didn’t want Toyota giving me shit if I had an issue under warranty.

    To be honest I’ve never seen anyone have issues with the plastic ones. If you torque to spec, they’ll come off just fine.

    There's no difference in a 2016 and a 2019 is there? Just went to Amazon to pick up this kit and says it doesn't fit a 2019? Says it fits a 2016 though.

    I’m all for OEM everything, but didn’t want to deal with a warranty issue. Like if you put Tundra brakes on and go in for a master cylinder warranty, you’ll get denied if they notice.

    Everyone always quotes the Magnuson act and saying Toyota has to prove this or that. The fact is they don’t have to prove anything and oftentimes tell owners to fuck off.

    Tundra everything, it’s not easy but people do it. You could probably fit a 5.7L in there. With wider fenders.

    Come on bud.. 40 year gm tech and you go for a dorman product on your new truck? Shame on you.. Ha!

    I've seen the good dorman products, and the shitty dorman products. I wouldn't use anything dorman on a new vehicle.

    One or both of the following issues is happening. Toyota may have different tolerances for the vehicles that employ either the alloy vs plastic cap, and/or their machining tolerances are a tad sloppy for this particular part. I have even seen new oil filter brackets (that is the part the cap screws into) that did not have the female threads machined in deep enough for any cap to seat properly.

    Yes, i too have used doorman products in past when could not get Gm parts that were discontinued etc, I did not at the time, seethe official Toyota part for Avalons that are metal and would work understand about mfgr's tolerance slop that can and I suspect contributed to my issues. Just thank God it didn't cost me an engine . Am curious however, does this vehicle have a low oil level sensor AND does it monitor and report during driving. ?

    No. If it fits the '16 it will fit the '19.
    They just haven't updated the ad to reflect the newer year. Same thing will happen if you searched for a 2019 battery, etc., etc. Or even an '18 battery a couple months ago. Even the big players are often behind the 8 ball..
