Good buy or not?

what main differences am I getting with a sr5? excuse my ignorance..

Im around the Salinas area.. Monterey county..

 

School me on this. Whats up with the 5lug/6lugs Tacomas?

 

6 lug Tacomas are the 4x4s and the Prerunners. 6 lugs on the wheels instead of 5. They are taller than the 5 lugs and on a slightly different frame. The Prerunner is basically just a 2wd version of the 4x4s (same everything except without a front drive train)

5 lug Tacomas have 5 lug wheels, and are lower to the ground. Not really meant for offroading as they are all 2wd and have little ground clearance, and less aftermarket options for lifts. 5 lugs are really just meant to be commuter trucks, or small load carrying trucks. The 6 lug 4x4s and Prerunners are designed to be more utilitarian and to be used more recreationally

6 lugs command a much higher resale value usually, since more people are interested in those

 

I also test drove this last week, but the owner seemed pretty shady lying about the trucks history.. brand new oil pan, engine oil, and brand new coolant. He said it was the previous owner and did not know anything about.. other minor things were the interior was dirty, and lots of dog hair everywhere.. He came down to $7200, but felt uncomfortable with what the owner was saying...

he was also trying to say it was a TRD Sport, and had lockers. which thanks to you guys, I found it to be false...

And one major difference between 4x4 and Prerunner is that Prerunner does not have transfer case.

Technically yes, but functionally it is a feature of being able to deliver twice more torque to rear wheels. What I meant to describe functional difference - 1: missing power to front wheels, 2: not able to put truck into "low" gear (for low speed and high torque). I have 4x4 with manual hubs so quite often I use low gear without powering front wheels (front hubs not locked) and that is for dragging cut-off trees on my property.

 

I have an '03 Pre runner, single cab stepside. It came with a 3RZ motor (2.7) and auto trans. It is an SR5 which was a package that included power door locks & mirrors, full center console, bucket seats and a white faced gauge cluster with a tachometer.

 

Hmmm.. it might actually work, and I go often to San Diego (if that’s where you’re located). Can you send me some pics, miles, and any history?

 

Definite pass...no 4wd, automatic tranny, 170k+ miles, and uhhh...$7,500????. No way man, I wouldn't pay over 5k for that.

 

You get a plastic badge that darts sr5. That's it. One of the most meaningless packages ever offered.

 

Lol, why am i believing you? Haha... I saw an “SR5” without power window or mirrors. Is that Normal? Or was it a badge just put on?

I came across that one before, I don't understand how it says its a 2004 but looks like a pre 2001 model. Anyhow, I am looking for at least a prerunner. Or as eon_blue explained earlier, a 6lug truck. Boy I'm learning fast here lol

@Frank319, I too have severe 1st gen regular cab lust but once made the mistake of buying a 2nd gen double-cab when I couldn't find what I really wanted and got impatient. Then for the next 3 years I regretted the purchase until I found my holy grail non-abused white 5 speed 4X4 regular cab. So the moral of the story is hold out for what you really want, it will all be worth it when you find "the one."

 

I'm pretty sure every 1st gen got SR5 badges regardless of trim. Both my '99 non TRD Prerunner had them and my 2004 TRD 4x4 has them.

 

My last taco was an 01 sr5. It had crank windows, manual locks, manual windows, a tape player, no interval wipers, no cruise control, a 2.7 with a stick. Pretty much every add on you can put in a car, it did not have. But it had crappy plastic sr5 badges, and the chrome was peeling off of them...
