Why did Toyota put drum brakes on the Taco rear?

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
    $$$

There's a video where a Toyota rep argues that drums are better for off-roading (which may or may not be true, I dunno'), but I'm pretty sure it really boils down to cost.

The brakes were the one major issue I had with the Taco. I converted the drums to discs (and made some other minor changes). Muuuuuch better, in my opinion.

It isn't just our Tacos. I got a '19 Highlander as a loaner and the brakes had the same weird feel.

How did you do the conversion? Is there a kit?

I plan on eventually changing my rears to 4runner disc brakes and, I assume, a 4runner master cylinder. That seems to be the easy swap.

See S.O.S. Performance. They have a kit. To do it right, you'll also need a new master cylinder since ours has proportioning built in for the disc/drum combo. They have the masters, but I'm pretty sure it's just a stock Sequoia master.

Added a DV8 bumper cover since I lost mine in the flood. And Finally installed the new grill. Too hot to hook up the lights though.

    Yep, that's it.

I didn't want to mess with it, so I had the swap done by a shop. I'm told the only nasty part is trying to remove the old backing plate (that everything mounts to). Helps if you happen to have a plasma cutter lying around.

Thanks, sweet video! That’s a good solid fix, for sure hardware is cheaper than a $230 tire.

I do have a bit of play available but not much I’ve got a 285/70/17 spare. My 2017 SR5 exhaust has a heat shield welded on the pipe and is part of the shield/hanger thats up against the tire. Since I’m at the farthest point already theres not much wiggle left to work with. So, I’m thinking a bend to the hanger and/or the exhaust will give me enough breathing room to loose the shield.

    Here’s a before and after:

Stuffed the driver rear tire up in the well and pinched the braided line on the upper shock mount. Shock fluid everywhere. Replaced the line, added more fluid and recharged the shock5EAFA3E9-8B8E-4683-B2FE-640FE25A9574.jpg

Ordered these bump stops to hopefully remedy the situation before our local TW camp and ride meet in a couple weeks

That’s clean, dude. I’m about to pull the trigger on that c4 hybrid with no hoop. They're sayin’ 12 week lead. How long did you wait?

I like it a lot, i got in on the original order back in Feb. It took around 13 weeks if i recall. It was worth the wait though.
