Faaack dude. It’s costs a ton to get vested in fly tying shit. I spent like $300 just getting the vice and starter materials. I don’t even want to know how much I’ve got in it now. I’ve got some weird ass fur. Bear, skunk etc. you can make some cool ass shit though. One of my favorite go to’s is called a rubber legged dragon. You can literally catch anything on one. There is absolutely nothing like a top water bite on a fly rod though. Another one of my favorites for trout is a California mosquito. I’ve got caught everything from bass to catfish on a fly rod. My regular rod is a TFO 5wt with a Orvis BBS reel. My favorite one is a 3wt Orvis TLS? I can’t remember. It was custom made with a Orvis BBS reel. Man it’s awesome catching a 1 lb fish on that 3wt.

I actually already have a cheap fly tying vice and a bunch of black maribou, hackle, and hooks. All I would need is a few heavier beads to get it down a little lower. I also used to live out in western South Dakota. I taught myself how to fly fish and tie flies out there. I was using a borrowed fly rod, but I bought my own tying gear. I got pretty good at tying woolly buggers, and I think those would be killer around where I live for just about everything.

I am already geared up for the ice season. I don't think I "need" anything new for this year. Last year I bought an 18V drill and an Eskimo pistol bit, and a few new high end custom ice rods. I might pick up some of the hottest new ice jigs that catch my eye and a few spools of line...but other than that I am already set.

It sure is. The hatchery was at sea level, but we could make a half hour hike up a mountain and be fishing on a fresh water lake for beautiful cut-throat trout. We were surrounded by mountains and had all the wildlife (except brown bears) within viewing distance at all times.

You have an open invitation. I have all the gear, the spots, and a place to stay. Ice fishing is nowhere near as uncomfortable as people would like to make it out to be. My portable icehouse easily gets to jeans and t-shirt warmth. To me its more of a social thing.

I wish I had one like that. If you get one that's fully rigged, they can be well over $50k. Kitchens, queen beds, AC for summer camping, wood paneling, flat screen tv's, granite counter tops...you name it, they have it. Those are really nice, but way too much for me. All I want is something about 6.5'x12'. Wide enough to sleep in, but light enough to put out on 8" of ice.
