I am pleased to report that the stop lights are now working. I also can see that the cruise control is operating normally again. Thank you to all who helped me solve this. You have made my weekend. I love this forum

It turns out that I did not fix this. I just went for a longer drive and stepped on the brakes after turning on the cruise control, and the cruise light is blinking again. I looked at the fuse panel and I noticed that I blew the stop fuse again.

So, there's a short in the brake light wiring in your newly installed lights.

    gotta find this today

does hot glue conduct electricity? I put the OE sockets into the FJ40 tail light housings, held in place with hot glue. I also stuck the metal reflectors in there. Maybe they are touching the bulbs.

Still curious about the hot glue. Also I stuck the reflectors from the FJ40 tail lights back in. Maybe they are touching the plastic part of the bulb base or the bulb itself. Would that cause a short?

I just ordered brand new OE tail light wiring harnesses and bulbs, and I’ll rebuild the FJ40 tail lights with more care, so that everything is as close to OE as possible. If the blown fuses continue, I’ll be pretty annoyed.

In the meantime I have not blown any more fuses, but I also have not turned on cruise control.
