My current '18 Tacoma OffRoad just kicked the bucket. My engine threw a code (no mods) saying Cylinder 1 fuel/air ratio. I took it to the dealership and thank goodness it was still under warranty. It's been in the shop for over a week and they can't figure out the cause or what the hell happened. In a nutshell, they got the engine out for tests and so far replacing 2 cylinders. That aside, I've always owned a manual transmission and would like an auto for my next purchase.

I know it's been covered ad nauseum, but are the 2019's and 2020's all clear of gear hunting? I prefer pickups but I have a bitter taste in my mouth and don't want to jump to the auto if it's still got problems. I'm honestly considering a 4runner at this point. Any input would be appreciated and I hope no one else has the issue I had. It's gotta just be that I got a lemon...

Don't ask about transmission problems. Some can't stand the automatic and some have no problem whatsoever. Drive it and see which one you are.

The 2020's are supposed to have the shift points adjusted. That said, I have little problem with my 2019. Yes it will downshift climbing a hill or some such. It's a small engine with the torque peaked in the higher rpms so I don't see how different shift points are going to solve driving in 6th at 60 mph and encountering a grade will change that behavior. It will still need to downshift to avoid chugging because in 6th at 60 mpg you running at around 2500 rpm which is well low of the max torque range.

As suggested, test drive and see what you think.

I honestly hated my 19 until about 3,000 miles then it/we changed somewhere around that time. I hit 8,000 miles last week while on a 5 hour round trip drive through Texas Hill Country. Enjoyed the entire drive and this week I left for work late a couple times and traffic was real boggy but then I'd see a straight away clearing up in the next lane, click my blinker, switch over & she gone. The majority of my vehicles have been manuals but my wife needs to be able to drive and there's a butt load of traffic here that just makes an Auto sweet at times. Plus, I've always preferred my cars manual and my trucks Auto. I know that seems backward but I've never had to back a trailer up in a manual car but I have in an Auto truck and it's way easier, so is off-roading for most part to me.

Yea, ive had little concrete info but the dealer said they pulled it and opened it up and all they said was there's an issue with two of the cylinders. I'd be surprised if they ever actually give me the full story at this point..

If Toyota decides to install a new short block be sure to ask for diminished value compensation. Keep us posted on the root cause of the problem and best of luck.

It is your truck. Request a detailed description in writing.

If you keep it, maybe with a free extended warranty, the documentation could be useful down the road.

If it was my Taco, I'd hang on to it to see if it is problem free. If another issue crops up, then have a good conversation with Toyota for some solid goodwill.

    Just additional $.02 here ...

We know that the transmission 'learns' the driver's habits for the first 1500 miles ....

My gear hunting was so bad I can only theorize that the previous owner drove like a scared squirrel ...

I'm about done with that 1500 period and pretty sure my issues are gone.

Toyota isn’t going to pay out a diminished value claim. People are taking this shit way to far.
