I know little about modern engine design. The only engines I’ve ever completely torn down and rebuilt are a few 22r/e’s. I’ve done head gaskets and other repairs on other engines but I’m not that experienced or knowledgeable.

What I’m wondering is how much the power curves on this engine are dictated by physical / material design vs the pcm.

The max torque output is north of 4800 iirc. I understand that there is variable valve timing now, which I’d guess is controlled electronically and with some type solenoid. (?) Do these engines even have cam shafts?

When one retunes (flashes the pcm with say, ov) does it also change the timing and what would traditionally be the cam shapes?

    How about some good reading?

It is way more than VVT. Add in ACIS and shitty ECU logic.

That said, the hardware is very good. The 3mb engine tune file just sucks. The torque and MPGs that OVT finds is true revealing.

Interesting. Octane rating 91 +. Seems to be unsettled opinion about this but there it is b&w

I’ll have to read this when the kid (and wife) are either away or asleep.

Basically I’m in the early stages of considering ovtune vs 4.88’s but want to understand how the tune works before I jump on that wagon.

Emissions dictates a lot. They don't want unburnt fuel leaving. Complete combustion with good temps is what matters.

Tacomas challenge was underhood temps, moving the cats closer (no more manifolds) and overall emissions standards.

Sure the 2Gr makes 310hp in Lexus, but it cant sustain that in a truck towing for 6 hours. So torque and low temps were made as a compromise.

The most amazing thing about this engine.....

How much of a fuckin turd it is in a truck.

It makes good power, you just can't use it. I hope tuning can take care of some of that, but I'm a skeptic. I do believe a tune can make the throttle more linear (bearable) and that may be enough to make it liveable. For the money a tune costs, I hope so.

You want to go from 4.30s stock to 4.88? You're going to be in it for about $1,500. OVT is half that and would most likely net you an MPG bump along with torque and driveability.

Something with a decent usable torque curve. Hell a 22RE had that.

OVT FOB or 2.0 Beta tunes would change your mind.

Exactly where I’m at, I just want a better understanding as to what the tune does

Edit: actually I’d be in for closer to $2100 for gears around here

Have you tried stepped on the skinny pedal faster and getting the engine above 3500 rpms?

I'd hope so for what it costs.

Still have to burn up the clutch off the line though. Esp uphill.

Yeah and that jerky ass surge at about 4000 when it shoots to redline, and then shift to second and it bogs? Yeah I've tried that.

I've also tried stepping on the pedal in second gear, and it bucks and misses and then eventually lurches on down the road.

I'm not going to derail the OPs thread further. My apologies.

I'll be out mashing the little pedal on the right waiting for something to happen if you need me. If I do that in my junky old '85, it smoothly moves down the road. But it's Hi-Tech right?

    Peace out.

There's a ton of info on 1.05B on his website. 2.0 is even better, but no notes posted yet.

Simply, he basically rewrites all aspects of the stock tunes.

91 octane is needed not for the power but for the knock you would get when changing timing.
