    This !

I love driving manual cars, and I had a 5 speed Jeep Tj that was a blast too. Pickups on the other hand, can’t stand driving a manual. Wanted to get into a manual 3rd Gen after getting out
of my 2nd Gen but just didn’t like it at all. So here I am in an auto again and love it.

    This is good advice below.

Ad nauseum on 2018 TRD Off road transmission shifting
I just had 15k service done and wanted it re-flashed because I heard there was a “fix”. I was told that there are no service bulletins related to the issue, so the memory was cleared. So far it seems better, and I can live with it.

The air/fuel ratio code can be quite a few things... Off the top of my head..

    if they'd dropped the engine and taken the cylinder head off;
    hopefully.
They will have already checked MAF, O2 sensors and checked/swapped injectors around to rule them out...
Tested the intake gasket for leaks.. Checked valve travel...
They then should have done a compression and leakdown test and may have seen something there. To warrant taking the head off.

Since they said 2 cylinders and only 1 is throwing the code,
complete shot in the dark guesses,
    in order of probability are;

    Head gasket leak,
They didn't do all the proper checks first,
Intake manifold or manifold gasket leak down near the bottom,
ring or cylinder wall damage more evident on one cylinder and starting on another.

Do that and make your own opinion.

And go into it knowing there aren’t transmission “problems” there are behaviors that some people don’t like in some situations.

For sure. The transmission has been bulletproof. When considering the 10s of thousands of newbs in their 1st 4WD, and their first pickup truck driving the living shit outta these trucks, it’s clear the Aisin Automatic transmission is very reliable. I can’t think of a single failure on this forum.

But oh the whining about shift point programming........that’s been fucking epic!!!! I think there has been more written about it than you could fit in the Library of Congress.

    /Off topic; Apologies to Op
But you could always search the forum as there are numerous posts on the service bulletins that cover the new flash, you just go to the dealer and tell them your truck has those symptoms as described in the TSB. If you still get the blank stare you can hand them a copy of the service bulliten that covers your truck.
OR you could just ask them to perform a "Health Check" with Techstream on your truck and the newest version of the firmwares for ALL the different computers in your truck will come up.
OR you can browse the other threads that describes what cable to buy and how to flash it yourself. (firmware is even posted on this site).

So to summarize the A/t tranny issues, get the flash that is for 16-some 18's,
That brings it upto the same as the 19's and from what I've heard very similar to the 2020's.
Which is, less low end torque VS the 2nd gen under 3k rpm and a little bit of "gear hunting" on hills but overall "pretty darn good". If you pay attention to the road and the radio and not the rpm's you should not have an issue.

If you want it better, you have 4 choices...

    OVtune
    Get a Manual transmission Tacoma,
    Re-gear,
    buy a different truck

    I classify it as CDTW

    Clostridioides-Difficile-Tacomus-Worldus

Just like the Regular C. Difficile, it causes excessive diarrhea, and is difficult to cure once infected....

You missed a few standard options. Added them in for accuracy.

    Lol,
Those are options errrr side effects once infected with CDTW, it's a viscous disease of the mind and ass.
People in the terminal stages are evident in their ability to talk through their ass while defecating.
