    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

I didn't mean you would have all of it in one screw. My bad, I should have said lag screws in a 2x2 instead of a screw in a 2x2.

Depending on what type of floor joist you have... these are the ones that have been predominantly used since the early 90s.
    TJI-joist-image-700x251.jpg

It's only a 2x2 on top and bottom, for you to screw in a lag screw. Now the weight (say 400 lbs) would probably be fine distributed over 4 screws. But there isn't a lot of meat to them. Just make sure you hit the center when you drive your lag screw. And drill a pilot hole about half the size of the lag screw.

I never miss Porter on tap! I love being here and hate leaving. Leaving leads to thirst and I don't like dehydration.

God, that’s what it looks like under there? That looks like it could barely support a thing. House was built in 2005 don’t know if that makes a difference.

If it was built in '05 it almost definately is truss joists. They are actually very good at what they do, they are very rigid, and they don't expand, contract, or settle like the older style floor joists did.

They just aren't designed to have lag screws put in them... lol.

Like I said though, 400# spread over 4 lag screws should be alright... but you see now why I said you gotta hit them in the center. And again, drill a pilot hole about 1/2 the diameter of the lag screw, then drive the lag. If you just try to force the lag in to the bottom you could damage the lamination of the layers of wood, your lag could also start to go crooked... and it'll just be a pain in the ass to do.

    I assume 2x2 means it’s approx 2” thick?

How long of a lag bolt should I be using?

Yes, approximately 2 inch by 2 inch... that will change depending on the engineers design. Could be wider (rarely will it be narrower).

As far as size lag bolt... I'd go with 3.5 inch length minimum, and 3/8 thickness minimum. (probably better to go with 1/2)

Not sayin I disagree with ya... but I was just trying to "report the news" not trying to associate any blame. Pretty sure most can read my opinion in to it though.

But I wasn't trying to be political. Just thought people should know their money has now been (predictably) diverted.

Let's try and stay away from making it a political issue... I don't want to get a time out... again.

I was planning on 4-6 joists. 4 is probably what I’ll do because those Unistrut hangers are PRICEY! At $15 each. I know the shear is about 200-300 lbs per screw. Didn’t realize the floor joists were that skinny.

    Thanks

Went to check out the house in Pope valley, man it needs alot of work. And my wife would have a serious commute. So we're still thinking about it. But if price is right, might do it.but it does have a corral for the goats and a 1/2 acre lot..
