Makes sense. The tree had to grow a deep tap root ( as all trees do in "the wild"), because you didnt supplement or overwater it which would have resulted in a weak short tap root. Weak short tap roots lead to shitty trees. House with a good foundation logic.

@StayinStock if you are a tree guy, before planting auger as deep as possible below your hole to break up the compacted dirt. Then dont water unless signs ofunderwatering and let that tap root grow big and deep. Also consider the roots will be about twice the size of the tree canopy so best to not plant against pools, deeply poured concrete, etc..

Oh snap, you planted a tree today. I would just try to not overwater it early on so it can develop a good tap root. That said, it may be hard with the green lawn and its watering.

 

I've heard this about the roots extending out way past the canopy. It seems that once a tree gets pretty big, there is no use watering it unless you plan on watering a huge area. Is this correct?
