I’m new to towing so looking for advice from more experienced people. My wife and I are looking for a camper to travel and some of that will be in the appalacion mountains. SP 240 is the column of the trailer we are considering. I appreciate any advise. DCC2666B-D991-4D37-BB50-B9A87BA07326.jpg

Honestly it won’t be enjoyable. Not The proper truck for towing a trailer in the hills. Very least you could re-gear which would help A LOT.

Where do you live? Do you have kids? It's pushing a Tacoma, and a family + mountains will make it not-so-fun to drive.

Then again they warned me if I regear theres a bigger chance of my breaking the gears if I try to tow heavier weights.

I find that very hard to believe. I would go as far as to say some aftermarket gears may even be more durable then the factory gears.

A regear to 5.29 will make a world of difference when towing a load like this, and just as much in every day driving.

at 26 foot long with all your gear and other goodies loaded the weight it self is OK the length and weight combined may not make a very comfortable drive especially if you get into Skyline drive and get hit by strong wind. Best thing to do is rent something of same weight and length for a weekend and see if it is something you are sure you will be comfortable with.

This. 36 gallons of water is another 300lbs. Food, beverages, clothes, housewares, propane etc is easily another 500 lbs. Just right there you're within striking distance of 5k pounds and haven't accounted for anything extra (games, tools, BBQ, camp chairs, firewood, et al). That truck is going to be working hard with that trailer. Is it do-able stock? Sure. Would it be better with air bags & regearing? Yep. Will it be anywhere near as comfortable as towing with a half ton? Never.

Thank you all. I’m going to continue searching for something a bit smaller, maybe about a thousand pounds less.

I've pulled out 19' Scamp up and down the Appalachians from GA to VA without any problems but it maxes out at 3.5K with all our gear. I wouldn't go with anything heavier though. Teton Pass on the WY/ID border kicked my butt with this combo earlier this year.

Thanks again, Im looking at a 2014 Forest River Vibe now. Dry weight is less than 3200 so I’m going to stay in that range. Now I will just comb this section for info on setup and general towing knowledge.

Still technically safe to pull. Use weight distribution and sway control, load your trailer properly and keep most the cargo in the trailer. Drive that rig at 55mph in s4. Keep your following distances.

We consider our Chalet A-frame trailer to be more of a 'camp trailer' than a 'travel trailer' tho we do haul it all over the western US.. Camping has to do with leaving the appliances, and conveniences more at home. Consequently, we travel light. Empty weight about 1300lbs, we keep it at about 2300-2400. Truck handles it fine, still need to downshift in the hills and mountains. Many folks want to have more conveniences with them and the weights balloon. IMHO, the Tacoma is not the best choice for hauling your life around the country in a travel trailer. Good luck with your decision

I towed a trailer about that size from VA to OR a few years back. The truck made it, but it wasn't fun. I averaged 10mpg the whole trip, and was down at like 5mpg on the tank driving up into the mountains on TN on I-40. It sucked. We bought an F150 with the 4cyl Ecoboost and it pulled it like it wasn't even there. Get a bigger truck or a smaller trailer.

Shoot for no more than about 3,000-3,200LB loaded that will make your trip a lot more friendly
