2015 double cab long bed 4x4 gas mileage

I understand it’s a truck and it’s not suppose to get great gas mileage. Truck is a 2015 (new to me) with 75k I just upgraded to LT duratracs 265/75/16 WITH NO LIFT. I am averaging 14.9 miles per gallon and about 265 miles per tank. Something seems off. Could over oiling a K&n filter restrict air flow causing this decreases? I’ve read on here of other guys with bigger tires and with a lift getting better gas milage. Maybe look at getting the fuel line and injectors cleaned? I usually run the middle gas options, if that matters. Thanks for any insight.

 

I'll say it first. Get an OEM filter and clean your MAF.

Already have an OEM filter arriving tomorrow that I will install tomorrow. I’ll look at how to do the MAF cleaning. Thanks.

 

Those heavier tires will hurt fuel mileage some but not that much. That's what I'm getting with 285/70r17s duratracs e load range and 3 in of lift plus armor. Did you get better fuel mileage before the tires? Doing a thorough cleaning of the intake and fuel system may help a little bit but you don't have a lot of mileage on the truck for it to be a significant imcrease if any really. Check your spark plugs, the maf cleaning is a good idea as well.

 

I bought the truck and put new tires on it within a month so I don’t really know. I did pull of the the spark plugs to have a look and was told they looked fine. Anyone disagree?

These trucks sure aren't known for good mileage. I have averaged over the last two years right is about 17 mpg. I have got 21 on the highway going a nice steady legal speed. But that's how she goes.
l just make sure everything working properly, and enjoy the reliability of a Tacoma.

I had an ‘05 for a long time that averaged 17-18 mpg normally. I ran 265/75/16 Duratracs also, load range C. This was 140-181k miles.

 

Just saw that these are load size E. Looked it up and they are only 6lbs heavier than C. IDK if that plays a big enough roll. I feel like it should be around 17-18.

 

I wouldn’t think it would make a big difference. I’ve only calculated one tank with my 2010 that I have now and it was 17.9. The tires are load range E too, but off brand Linglong Crosswind AT.

 

6 lbs of rotating mass will definitely affect your MPGs.... That and driving habits....

 

Been trying to keep it under 2500 rpms which isn’t hard to do.

 

You didn't buy a Tacoma for fuel efficiency, at least I hope not.

 

I have a 2015 long bed with 285’s some aluminum armor and I get about 15.5. But then againI didn’t buy it for a gas miser. And it is still better than the Dodge Hemi 4 door I was driving before hahahah

 

I drive a Prius as a DD and Uber/Lyft car. Around 50 mpg vs. hopefully 18 lol.

 

Correct, that’s why I said “ I understand that trucks don’t get great gas mileage.” Something is up if people with bigger tires, lift, and armor are getting 2/3 miles more a gallon.

 

My 13 gets somewhere around 16mpg and 300 miles a tank on Wildpeak 265/70/17. Noticed only a tiny decrease in mileage after switching from E rated 245s. However, after replacing the OEM air filter with a fresh one with this most recent service, I've noticed my gas mileage go up a decent bit.

 

I forgot to mention that I’ve never tried a K&N engine air filter. Too many mixed reviews for now. I did put a K&N cabin filter in my ‘05 before it was totaled. Seemed really good with strong airflow.

 

Mine's a 2014 TRD OR, access cab 4wd with a six speed manual. I'm at about 82,000 miles running 245/76-16" P rated Michelin Defenders and I'm getting a little over 18 mpg in mixed driving. It drops a little if I'm rolling down the interstate doing 80.
Your plugs look fine. My recommendations would be new air filter, clean MAF sensor. I run about 35 psi in the front and 32 in the back. Also, I'm lifted 2" and drive pretty reasonably.
