I still think it must be a regional thing or the OP maybe didnt input things exactly the same. I just entered in an OR and Sport Manual Double Cab into KBB and it spit out:
OR $27674 - $30013
Sport $27629 - $29964

 

FWIW my ‘14 DCSB 4x4 SR5 was just totaled by insurance and they paid me $29,500

 

I bought it back for $9k just a bit of water in the floor, dried out now

If you live in a high tax area and have decent negotiating skills trading can be much better.

 

Even better. When I sold my Jeep, private party, we did paperwork at the dealership I was buying my truck from. Paid dealer a $500 processing fee but still saved a lot of money on taxes

 

I just checked KBB in my area and yes, the Sport is almost $3500 more than an Off Road What in the world?

 

I used to be in auto sales so I basically know all of their tricks. I walked yesterday on a 4x4 runner that a certain dealer was asking only 22,800. Awesome deal right? After I told the manager what I was willing to pay on top of that,being really straight forward because I don’t want to waste either of our time. He came back with a drive out of $30k. The sales manager with absolute zero people skills basically said the reason they can sell their vehicles so cheap was because they made their money on the back end. Felt like a sleazy deal from the beginning so it’s probably a blessing. They were charging me $1300 just for using my own credit union.

 

Depreciation drops quickly on a new vehicle, but that evens out somewhat by negotiating significant discounts. Buying a new Tacoma with, let’s say, $5-6k off, and decent financing cuts the loss considering how well the Tacoma holds its value.

 

KBB is a joke. Black book comes out weekly. I bought several vehicles and only use black book and NADA, not the consumer edition which is different. Also depends on the vehicle, condition, fixes, color and over all appearence. Also how many dealers are at the auction and who is bidding. So many factors that no two vehicles are the same and not in terms of the package.

 

So I just looked at KBB for my OR vs an identical Sport. The OR came back $1300 higher than the sport.

I guess I live in a region where people value function over fake hood scoops.

 

A lot also depends on if the buyer/dealer thinks the vehicle is in rough, average, clean and not how you think it appears. It is all in what someone will pay. There is an ass for every seat!

 

Agreed. Dealers wouldn’t be pulling the dumb shit they pull if they weren’t getting away with it on a regular basis.

 

I figured there was some type of commercial account for KBB when I saw the KBB printout provided by the dealer and the value was lower than the value quoted on the regular consumer website. I’ve referenced NADA at times in the past and found it to be reliable. I’ve never heard of Black Book, so I’ll have to check it out.

 

I just checked 17 Sport AT vs 17 OR AT and OR was worth $52 more here . 29,110 --- 29,162 . Trade in to dealer average .

 

Black Book also shows Sport worth more than OR, but only by $1000. I used 2019 w/ 12k miles.

 

Black book is put out by Manheim auctions. Depends on what book shows the best numbers for the buyer or seller. They all pit one against the other when trying to get the best deal.

 

I believe it's simply a case of the Sports being more in demand, at least here in the east as when I was shopping for my '18 TRDSDC I checked 4 dealerships and inventory of Sports on their lots was 3-5 times that of their ORs. All told me that that stocked more Sports because they were in more demand.
