Took the truck out to Bridgeport this weekend and had a blast. New to off roading and on one part up a hill I was loosing traction and didn’t have the rear diff engaged. When trying to climb up, the truck died/turned off. Is there a reason it would do this?

Started right back up and then I engaged the rear diff and away we went.

That's normal for the truck to die if you're losing traction going up and slide down a little bit. Happened to me in Moab a few times. Forgot what the reason was. I think it's so you don't overheat your transmission or something to that extent.

That's sketchy. Reminds me of when my buddies 1st gen died at the top of a steep hill. The battery was loose and cut off right at the top. He lost braking power and rolled back. Hit a huge rock on the way down doing about 40 in reverse.

No. It is not normal for your truck to die if it’s losing traction, and there is no reason for it under normal circumstances. What a fucked system that would be.

Happened to a lot of us at Moab with 3rd Gens. We would get a warning for transmission overheating or something like that. I read somewhere on here that it’s to prevent torque converter from heating up or something. It starts right up after it dies out. Have you been on steep inclines and lost little bit of traction and rolled back? If you haven’t experienced it than you wouldn’t understand. Brakes still work it doesn’t lock up.

You’re gonna rip those mudflaps off in addition to the other damage that will occur.

    Were you in 4HI ?

Absolutely if you are overheating your transmission, but that is different than it shutting down because you are losing traction.

It will shut down and not let you press the throttle. The truck doesn’t die it’s still in the on position and the power brakes still work but you can’t go anywhere until you shut off the truck and let it cool. It’s the “Transmission Protection Function”. For some reason if you’re going up an incline and you lose traction and roll back it kicks in. When it happens you get the High Trans Fluid Temp error message. It happened to all of us in Moab going up a steep incline that we slipped a lil on. Thankfully it didn’t happen to us going up Hell’s Gate.

Long steep hills. My 3rd 4runner couldn't make it up due to not having enough engine power. I rolled backwards much faster than I would have liked. I couldn't stop the truck it was so steep.

Did you roll backwards at all? My trucks done it one time at bridgeport when i lost traction and slid/rolled back trans temp light went off and the truck turned off. It started back up right away and crawled up with no problems after that. I've never had it happen again in the 3 yrs I've owned my truck.

Well maybe the word “die” is the wrong one in this thread. When a fella tells me his truck “died”, I assume he means the engine has turned off. Maybe it’s local to where I live or something.

I guess “died” wasn’t the right term. Was still in the on position and rolled back. Was after loosing traction a couple times trying to go up the hill.

Yeah, I need to take the mud flaps off.
