found a '96 TRD off road single cab ... good buy or not?

Correct, there was no TRD package for this truck in the single cab, 4cyl/4wd is actually not rare tho,
6cyl/4wd is more rare because they were only available in 1996-1997 in the single cab, while the 4cy was available from 1996-2004 in the single cab.

 

True, I bought a 95.5 1st gen right after they came out. Totally stripped. 5mt, No ac, no PS, no radio, cloth bench seat, crank windows. Sticker was 9 something. I paid under $11k after VA taxes including dealer installed accessories: antenna, rear bumper, passenger side mirror, floor mats, undercoating, bed liner and a anti-theft devise ( truck would only start when the fan was set to low).

Ran that thing with only minimal Maint. 15 years/ 379,000 then sold it for $2,700!

 

I bought my truck new in 1997 and had the upgraded package SX and had NO AC,
Had an aftermarket on install a few months later

I suppose it depends on how picky one is, I thought the price was a bit high for a 4cyl with that many miles, but that is probably how the used car lots operate around here
... no idea what condition the metal is under the plastic liner, i just took a peek by the rear, or what may be under the flares, and the ripped driver seat. It did have a custom looking center console with a lock and custom tweeters in the door panels and a supposed working sub somewhere I did not get to check out. and no idea about the clutch/transmission
it did appear to have newish tires, leaf springs and rear shocks
and that rear bumper!
the hood has a bit of rusty gravel rock chips

If the frame is good it’s a deal with thousands of miles too go and the value will be the same regardless how many miles you drive

 

i just didn't know about the 4cy with head gasket and timing chain

Yea, from day one, every oil change is logged and repairs if the dealer did it

Absolutely, if it’s past 20 years I’m probably not the only one not knowing what month I bought my truck, Mmm
