FWIW, I have the 4:88's with OVTune and stock tires. When loaded, the truck still cycles between 4th and 5th at 70MPH on a slight uphill.

    What's your rpm at though.

My other concern is with the weight i can only get in 6th gear if it's completely flat if not down hill at 120km

    In 4th gear 75mph @ 4000 RPM. About 78mph if you factor 33’s.

wooo wooo, Nitro Gear gang, just picked up my truck with my 4.88's installed and holy shit am i blown away at my trucks performance. literally a night and day difference in torque, power and driveability. I'm so glad i got it done. I'm driving it a little more conservative than i normally would, even though i got the REM polish on them. wow, it feels like a different truck entirely.

Nice! Even though they are REM I would definitely recommend a fluid change at 1k miles. Going to be some shavings in there but it’s all good

I was actually going to do it at 500. Omg I absolutely loves how my truck feels now. It doesn't big down. It doesn't feel like it's straining. Shit even the engine and transmission sound better than it did before.

Super glad you like it man! With OVTune’s 4.88 tune it’s even better. I just drove from Portland Oregon to Boise Idaho towing my boat and a bed full of stuff and got 16mpg the whole way. That’s 440 miles at 65-70mph the entire way!

Your plan to change at 500 is solid. Cheers!

Yeah, about that lol. I tried messaging OVtune about the 4.88 tune but I haven't gotten a response from them on here or on IG. I'm really interested in fine tuning my truck too. I hear good things about them.

He’s not answering many messages in too many places right now cause he’s moving his shop(and is developing superchargers and turbos and tunes for the Tundra and 2nd gens and he’s got a new kid, and, and, and...) . He’s not taking orders for tunes either till the end of the year-ish I believe so basically just got buckle up and wait for a few months before you may be able to get a 4.88 tune.

Best explanation I've heard all day. It's all good. I bought my gears a few months ago and just not got around to getting them done up. I got nothing but time.

Ok guys I need your help. I have read all these threads about new gears on a third gen. I did OVTune first and it helped but still lack of power. I did a 3” lift with 265/70/17 so not quite a 32. OVTune isn’t enough and it’s starting to be miserable daily driver.
Who here has done 4.88 on a similar set up? Did it feel like a normal truck with new gears and OVTune? I see most people regear at 33 and up. Who has done it on stock tires or 31’s?

They are a big improvement ! For 33" tire or smaller! If you are running a 31" tire your really going to feel major improvement in power and gear holding. As you start to exceed 31" tires it starts to to affect the power and gear holding. Also if you start adding armor, bumpers and other heavy items it will hurt its power and gear holding! But if you can keep the RPM's at 2000 or under under you can still get really good MPG's. All of this is based on my truck and the way i drive it.

Did you calibrate your speedo? If not your speed is closer to 80 MPH.

Night and day improvement. I'm at about 100 miles of my 500 mile break-in and the truck drives flawlessly. I'm running 285/75/16 tires and the difference between stock gears and 4.88's is incredible.

That’s good to hear! I’m sure it will tow my travel trailer a whole lot better

I have. I’m running an identical setup. I don’t agree that with OVtune it’s not enough. The gears just add about 400 rpms per gear of optimal power range. Stock gears work fine with that setup and 32’s. I drove like that for over a year. What version of the tune are you using? 2.0 is awesome regardless of gears

2017 Mt OR, just regeared to 4.88. I was skeptical if it was worth it to go from 4.30 to 4.88 and if I should just do 5.29s but I feel like I made the right call especially for the long hwy miles and mpgs. I'm running 33s, full skid plates, bumpers, winch, dual battery and sliders with a camper on the way. I got my torque back!
