    What hasn't been modified?
    Put a 4runner case in.
    There (at least 2nd gen) a direct swap. Then just a few new wires to run the the ecu.

    I’ve got 2wd, 4wd, awd, and low range

    This is for the pro side of AWD vs 4x4 plus no rust after 13 years, paint is thicker on subie than Tacoma.

    AWD is better on the road. 4x4 will get you out of the ditch!

    Paint might be thicker (if you’re right, but I can’t seem to find proof?) but the metal on the Tacoma is far superior, both on the actual frame and body panels - as opposed to the Subaru’s Tin can body panels and thin unibody metal.

    Not saying your wrong, but can't argue with the fact that Tacoma Frames have been replaced due to rust!

    Agree with @Tocamo the frame on my subaru after 13 years had no holes and the body looked great.
    The Subaru with winter tires is hard to beat in bad weather on the highway,
    The Tacoma is a great truck and if it has good tires is better once the snow gets deep.

    Subarus are lighter, and have an awd system that is designed for snow. Great on road performance and shorter braking distances due to the lighter weight. They are also designed for lesbians, so there's that.

    I've owned 2 foresters and had so many lesbian jokes thrown at me. Super fun, probably the most fun I've had daily driving. (in winter)

    My wife was showing interest in a Subaru Outback or Forrester. Friends and I asked her if there was something I needed to know. We also asked her if she was going to buy annual passes to Disney World.

    Basic fanboy of you, you're a real belieber. Should I use my quad and trailer as the excuse? I gotta use keywords like "hauling" and "crawling"? I loved my truck until I started learning about all the faulty driveline stuff. Now it's becoming more of a headache, and I don't enjoy doing 70 wondering if anything is fixing to fall off.

    scared of things falling off? the doom and gloom of the forum is making you afraid of what is going to go wrong with your truck? I think you made my case.

    Not really. It's the service bulletins, extended warranties, recalls, noises, and expensive repairs and runaround. And the legit risks of driving with those driveline issues. It's not for me, it's not worth it to me just to say I have a Tacoma.

    But let's stick to the original purpose of this thread. On snowy roads and highways, a Subaru's symmetrical full-time awd is better than traditional 4hi. But for deeper stuff, a TRDOR is hard to argue with.

    Life is simple:

    4WD = Toyota
    AWD = Subaru
    2WD = Honda
    1WD = Yamaha

    the real issue is people buy vehicles, which are tools, based on “looks” “perception” and/or daydreaming scenarios.. rather than just buying the actual tool they actually need for the actual job.

    I just drove 6,500 miles in the 3rd Gen 4Runner with my wife. We loved having 4x4 for the first 99% of the trip. But that last leg home through Denver all the way to South Dakota in ice blizzard weather sure had me missing my Subaru (and planning to get another as a next vehicle).

    rear wheels kicking out on every single ice patch, wondering if We should be running 4x4 or not, ice at any moment, driving a tall, too-heavy REAR WHEEL DRIVE brick sure stresses one out in real icy conditions.

    That’s why when the 93 Pickup finally goes we will be getting an Outback. And when the 99 4Runner finally goes we will be getting another 2nd gen Tacoma. Because having one AWD and one 4x4 each in the stable covers all of our driving needs. We average double the national average for miles driven per year and that’s with being out of country several months and stuck in blizzards for a few more so vehicles are important to us. But they’re still depreciating assets so don’t waste your money “upgrading” every few years. Stick with what you have and be happy to make it work. Worry about what’s best next when your Toyota dies haha. So in 20-30 years..

    Conditions warrant what works "best" along with skilled driver input, yet there are some major differences. AWD has a constantly fluctuating power distribution system dividing the engines power to all 4 wheels, yet when not locked can typically only direct 70% of the engine power to the one wheel that might have traction. Whereas 4WD can direct 100% of the engine power to one wheel through the transfer case. And typically 4WD systems have larger diameter parts and are built to be more robust.
