This was my experience also , truck drives great and the vibration is almost totally gone . It was a big improvement for sure

Here's something I've learned after a year and a half of Tacoing; these are raggedy, clankedy ass trucks. They look great, have Toyota logos on them and all that but don't expect the world from these machines, they aren't your suburban technicals, at least not out of the box.

I think part of the issue is the MSRP and resale value. People come to Tacoma expecting something really premium (as far as a light truck goes) and end up being a bit disappointed when they discover it ain't all it's cracked up to be. Buying a Taco is like meeting your heroes; yeah it's cool at first but eventually you lose some respect for what you admired before.

That being said look around, what are the alternatives? GM twins? Ranger? Wrangler w/ a bed? Don't waste my time. No one wants to be even related to someone who owns one of those outside of warranty.

So with Tacomas you just have to set your expectations. Will it go 300k? Yeah, more than likely. But you'll have some diff howling, you'll have some Taco leaning, you'll experience axle wrap and bumps and clunks and all manner of non-modern feeling transportation...but your Taco will be on the road in 10 or 12 years while those shitty midsize domestics are rusting in a junk yard with their spare parts being carried off in a bed of a Tacoma.

Well put for the majority of it, that being said, I don't think it's too much to ask that the most revered truck maker on the planet to learn from their mistakes, fix their QAQC and stop buying substandard parts somewhere between 2016-2019. I mean, look at the speakers they put in here, they're cutting corners and profiting more. I was impressed with the bump of my orange 2nd Gen radio and speakers, enough to have never replaced any of it while owning it, just saying.
It's one of the better picks out there but if this represents where Toyota is headed, I may have to start looking for a new brand to be loyal to..
    Either way, good point Tehkoema.

Hmmm, I bought a 2019 sr5 with just under 20K on the clock a month ago and I've been getting a 30ish to 0 brake vibration since I got it. At first, I wrote it off as rusty rotors from sitting that just need to "bed-in", but a little more than 2K later I still have the problem. I just read this entire thread and I think I need to do some testing on my own to isolate the problem. Funny, today I changed the oil and rotated the tires. If I knew about the rear axle hub clearance issue, I would have measured them and checked the rear drums for signs of being out of round. My vibration is slight but noticeable and is more noticeable under hard braking. It almost feels like bad rotors but it's coming from the rear. I'm a fix-it myself kind of guy, but the truck is under warranty so to the dealer I go. Before I go, I'm going to check under different conditions encluding weight in the bed, so I'm armed with as much info as possible when I take it in.

They did the drums on mine, ok but not fixed, the axles made the biggest difference..

I drove around and stopped under different conditions. It doesn't really do it under hard braking. At least it's not noticeable. In gear or not doesn't matter. It's definitely rear brake-related. It's not that noticeable, in fact, it seems better now than it was when I picked it up. I kinda got used to it, until a friend asked me if a noticed a vibration when braking when he was driving it. It's a 2019 SR5 that was sold in October 2018. I'll take it in next week.

When mine did that they said the torque specs were off and everything was over-torqued.

Last week mine went in and had the rear drums replaced. It seems better, but I've only had a few hours of time in the truck. I'm doubting it fixed anything though

I have an appointment tomorrow. I feel the kind of dread you feel before a colonoscopy.

For me, I cannot find any scenario when I can consistently and accurately reproduce the vibration. Tbh, some days I don't feel it at all. This all leads me to think it's axle wrap (at least in my case). Axle wrapping, putting a "reverse" torque on the drivetrain, which in turn causes some vibration. I find that when I brake slowly i don't feel the vibrations at all, but if I brake hard, sometimes I do.

I have had three visits to the shop for this issue. I think it is finally fixed based on no vibrations and smooth braking the last 500 miles or so. They replaced the axles, brake drums, brake shoes, and all associated seals and parts over the course of three visits and 5 days in the shop with them doing testing and investigating.

I brought my truck in yesterday. They said it was the front brakes and replaced them. It seems slightly better, but the vibration is still there. I told the service writer that I believe the vibration is coming from the rear, and that I was aware that Toyota has a service bulletin regarding this problem. But who am I to know anything? I'm just a customer. I'll drive it for a week and take it back next week. "AND SO IT BEGINS....."

Truck is back in over the weekend. They kept talking about "driveline" adjustments and remounting the tires to the wheels. They also talked about road force balancing on the tires which confused me because he was saying that the tires could cause the vibration. I always thought the road force was for balancing the wheels/tires simulating the weight of the truck. IDK

    Update:

2500mi after rear axles and drums being replaced, vibrations are back. Now I’m hearing something vibrate/rattle behind my head unit at certain frequencies elicited between 25-40mph, decel vibes are there. Appointment at Toyota Thursday morning - who knows. I’m sure axles and drums will be done again- but I’m now thinking this is a symptom and not the root cause, e.g. it’s driveline angle related. I’ve got my fingers crossed as I’m only at 9700mi and reeeeally don’t want a new truck that’s been torn apart and rebuilt over and over again.

My Tacoma started to vibrate when brake pedal was lightly applied.

Had my 24K KM maintenance done on October 16 (2 weeks ago) and I complained about the vibration when braking. Dealer said front rotors had a high spot so they machined the front rotors. Vibration was still there.

Vibration got worse so I made another service appointment. The tech found the rear drums were out of round and replaced them. Seems good now. I hope........

so my 2019 or 4x4 auto does this too. its very slight. if it doesn't get worse i don't care. i really don't want to play the "visit dealer 5 times and it still vibrates" game. Life is too short.

will just chalk it up to the character of the taco?

    diff howl- check
    rear brake vibes- check

    LOL..

    4500 miles on her now.

I was going to let it slide but it got like I was driving over rumble strips when braking. The bad news is that the vibration is coming back..........

    Stawk as FUCK!
Not to bump an old thread, but I just picked up the 2nd to last 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 Longbed and literally had shuddering braking problem that I'm 99% sure is what this thread is about... Took it back the very next morning after taking it home and Service Manager said he has to replace axles. Me and my fiancé are like WTF because it is a brand new truck with 255 miles on it, we've put 10 miles since signing papers... hell we are still on the same gas tank that the dealer filled up! UNREAL! What the helllll! Dealer said they will order the parts and that its ok to drive.... like really? I'm trying to go up to the mountains in 2 days for a snowboarding trip and need the 4x4.
