I have the 2019 Tacoma limited 4x4 with the automatic transmission. I just hit 9000 miles and it still has a dead spot when I slow down and make a turn it bogs to the point of stalling. I have the SS pro and the peddle commander. I have the SS pro at the highest setting and the peddle commander about half way. These two plug and play devices helped a lot but the dead spot is still there. If I stand on the throttle hard when turning it won’t bog but I shouldn’t have to drive it like this. I have a lexus and the transmission shifts so good so I know they have the capabilities of fixing it. The dealer said it drives normal. I get so pissed I just stomp it and hopes it blows up sometimes.

When you are towing the boat, what is the primary problem? I know it’ll pull and stop a 18.5’ bass boat that is 3200 pounds.

Is it just too slow for you? Too hard to get on freeways? Climbing mountains? What?

Well it ain’t the displacement because my 2.7L EB F150 work truck positively scoots. It’s a beast. Why Toyota chose to get so little umph outta the 3.5L, only Mike Sweers knows for sure. I love my Tacoma, and it’s been great, but it’s a slug to drive, and I agree with OP that it would be great if Toyota offered a factory “fix”. All they gotta do is come up with another trim level that has no ECU power limitations. They could have SR, SR5, TRD, TRD Pro, and “TRD Baller”. I’d buy the baller for sure.

Trucks don't need so much horsepower. Commercial trucks will actually come derated with less power than passenger car diesels for more reliability.

When you take off it doesn't seen to have the torque until it gets up to 3500 rpm's then it runs good but on the interstate it pulls down easily, when pulling a mountain in a dead pull the engine is tach out.

Make sure the hood scoop is opening fully when towing :D

My 19 seems fine so far. I have adapted my driving style a bit I seem to drive slower lol. It is engineered to try to get reasonable gas mileage while being capable when it needs to be. I haven't towed yet but I’d plan to keep it in the “power-band” with S mode when I do. When I would tow my camper with my 4runner with a 4.0 I would remove OD and need to give it a little peddle, this engine produces more horsepower it just does it at higher rpms.

My '17 Limited pulls my 19 ft. I/O bow rider with a steel trailer just fine. It's an old boat, gotta' be 4000 lbs. total.

It's not a cold air intake it's just the K&N filter may have to get the cold air intake.

This will rub a few people the wrong way, but under most circumstances (including this one) the K&N is only adding dirt, not HP.

I’d probably take the cash for useless mods and look at the aftermarket tunes. It’s not a lack of engineering holding the engine/hardware back , it’s the software. It’s a compromise as has been stated previously. It’s unfortunate they don’t give us a multitude of tunes we could choose by a dial, but epa Regs, cost, etc they make a compromise for economy and performance. It seems like a decent compromise to me so far.

You have a cold air intake from the factory. Dont waste your money on that.

It is to be expected by design ... TRD is pronounced “TuRD”! and that’s exactly what it feels like below 3500 rpm.

Don’t say that too loudly. You’ll make tons of people mad despite your truthful logic.

Is there any other tunes available other than the OV?

I’m not sure. Probably. I’ve seen a lot of positivity on the OVtune here. I’ve not looked into it as mine seems fine. I know that that can make a huge difference though. The engine is basically a race engine by design, it’s just held back my electronics to meet fuel efficiency and emissions stuff. Maybe you can find someone near you that has an OVtuned truck that you can drive and see if you think it’s worth it.

I think there was an early tune available that adjusted the trans shift points. But this did not alter the engine tune like the OVTune does.

    it is called Shiftsense Pro.
