I recently came across a post here on TW and someone mentioned 2017 being the last year for having the ability to absolutely disable their VSC/Traction Control. Meaning that the 2018+ model has limitations and that it doesn't disable completely as it did previously. Is this true? Thanks

I’m not sure exactly how disabled it is, but in my 2018, I can press the traction control button and get partial traction off (auto LSD light comes on) or I can hold it and I get a trac off light (or something like that)

Yes, this is my understanding about how all the rest of them work as well.
    Click: auto LSD
Long Press: trac off, VSC is off too and this gives you more play

I'm not sure why the person wrote that statement if its not accurate.

They might have been talking about abs. I don’t think you can disable it in any 3rd gen (regardless of year), but I could be wrong and you can in 17 and earlier.

Everything on the internet is true and accurate lol!!

Ok, I have read this as well. I wonder what it was meant by his statement.

The ecu turns it back on to prevent high speed roll overs.

I understand. I'm not sure why this would be different after 2017 though..

Maybe it's a part of the TSS and can't/wont disable or disengage.

Check out the Traction Control sticky:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3rd-gen-traction-control-modes-explained.530695/

The owners manual does a crappy job of explaining all of the functions.

    Get out there and experiment:
    IMG_20190615_103959.jpg

One big note here is that the systems function a bit differently and default to different setting in 4Hi and 4Lo if you have an OR or Pro compared to the rest.

If yours is working differently than explained in the sticky, then please post up so that it can be corrected for different model years.

Thanks. I don't own a tacoma yet. But will soon. And I am starting to understand the traction modes now after reading over them a few times. My original question was about a post that mentioned the 2017 being different, but I believe the OP was referring to the TSS adding the the "nanny" software being in the 2018+models. Though all 3rd gens have the same traction control features. Thanks

Yes. TSS-P was a big change, but it is unknown of the traction control stuff has changed also. It would be good to verify. Also, it is good to get out and get familiar with all the gizmos before you need them.

That very last part in your post is untrue. The OR and Pro models have a very different system, an electrically boosted braking system instead of vacuum, that doubles the available pressure to the ABS unit. They also have electronic rear lockers, CC / MTS in the ATs, and A-TRAC in the MTs. So, the traction control system defaults a bit differently in the 4wd modes.

From what I've read and seen others say, even with the TSS people with 2018s are able to disable the VSC and trac.

And thanks for the correction! Appreciate that. I guess what I was trying to get at in short was what I just mentioned above, about how they can still disable VSC and Traction. Now I know even more about the differences. Thanks

As far as I’m aware on my 2019 OffRoad- tap, auto-lsd (2wd) or trac off (4hi). Long press, trac off, vsc off below X mph

long press at a dead stop = trac & VSC off at all speeds

Both hydro-boosted (ORP/Pro) and vacuum-boosted brake systems received some VSC actuator updates for 18MY to handle the increased demands of TSS-P. However all model years function the same in terms of disabling TCS/VSC.
