Showers and storms are pushing southeastward across North Central Alabama this morning.

They cover much of the Tennessee Valley at this hour.

Stronger storms are over parts of Winston, Marion, Pickens and Lamar Counties. The NWS has significant weather advisories up for much of Pickens and Lamar Counties for winds to 40 mph, torrential rains, and frequent cloud to ground lightning.

The storms should weaken over the next hour or so. If they hold together, they should reach the Birmingham area around noon.

RADAR CHECK: Widespread rain, along with a few thunderstorms, is over North Alabama this morning along the long awaited cold front pushing into the state. The front, and the associated rain band, will push southward today keeping temperatures in the 70s all day over the northern half of the state. Heaviest rain will fall today north of I-59; amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely, with heavier totals over the Tennessee Valley.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and clouds along with a high around 80 degrees; the average high for October 8 at Birmingham is 78. We will mention a few isolated showers over the eastern half of the state, but most of Alabama will be dry. Then, generally dry weather is likely Wednesday and Thursday… the sky will be partly to mostly sunny with highs between 81 and 85. Morning lows will be in the 60-65 degree range, with 50s for cooler pockets.

Clouds will increase Friday ahead of the next cold front, which could bring some rain to the state Friday night. For now it looks like rain will be fairly light (amounts under a quarter of an inch).

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Another surge of cool, continental air will drop into Alabama over the weekend. Look for sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights Saturday and Sunday… highs in the 70s and lows in the low 50s. Colder spots will drop down into the 40s Sunday morning.

NEXT WEEK: Dry, pleasant weather will continue for at least the first half of the week with seasonal temperatures… See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

We had some pretty strong straight line winds at about 3:00 a.m. It was loud enough that it woke me up and I'm still worried that I might have a fence panel or two that need re-attaching. Also got some much needed rain, although now I'm going to have to cut the grass again :annoyed:

We did all of our grass cutting this weekend. Hopefully it will be the last time, but I doubt it.

Rain is awesome, we planted our fields this weekend so hopefully we hit it just about right. Bow season is only days away.

I have never hunted over a field planted for deer, do you sit and wait for them to come eat what you planted?

I rarely hunt over a field, we plant our fields mainly for growth and food supply. I am usually hunting deep in the woods looking for the big boys haha, don't see many of those in green fields. But if I'm needing meat i will sit on a field for a doe or 2.

I won’t be on the fields until the bucks start following the does on to them.

True that. I'm not a big green field hunter either. Green fields are usually hit by the does and a food source for the bucks at night. I try and get into the thickest stuff possible, that's where the big boys are hiding!

I completely agree, just not sure how the corn is going to affect all of that this year. Hopefully it will help but I'm afraid they will have an overabundant supply they will not travel as much in the day but rather every night.

Deer are smart, big bucks don't get that way by being stupid! lol Bow season is your chance to bag a really nice buck, especially if your area ruts pretty early. Once gun season starts, the deer know, and all the bucks go nocturnal, until they go into rut.

I agree i usually kill at least 1 good buck during bow season and may not see another good one the rest of the year(during day). Our rut has been moving later and later in the season over the past 5-10 years and we are now around the end of January.

Never hunted over bait. I use to get out a month or so before season starts and look for rubs, hair in barbed wire, tracks... then when season opens go hunt, but when I use to hunt it was against the law to hunt over bait, guess things have changed.

Where do you hunt? During bow season, I try and kill 2 or 3 does to fill my deep freezer. After that, it's horns only, unless someone I know is wanting some deer meat.

Yeah, I was surprised they allowed baiting here in Alabama this year. A few states allow it, but some frown upon it, they say it's cheating. Hey, it's how our ancestors hunted thousands of years ago. Back then, if you didn't hunt, you didn't eat. Baiting, greatly increases your odds of seeing one!

I've deer hunted and I just don't get it. Its early, its cold, you have to drag a 200 lb. dead animal out of the woods, and the meat sucks. :crapstorm:
