Believe it was a penalty and then maybe a big sack that pushed them back? It was something nuts I remember seeing the highlight just not the details

Busted CV boots and lots of squeaks.
Go ahead and pay the players.

However, they should then be required to pay for the "schooling", and right to play.

No more scholarships, free rides, or free gear, or.........wherever else these kids get for playing at a high level.

Tuition, room and board like everyone else.

why? The schools won’t be the ones paying them. They have nothing to do with it (in theory).

Every other student in that college can make money however they see fit. They still get scholarships. Why shouldn’t the players? Remember when the UCF kicker was told he couldn’t have a YouTube page because he was making money off of it? How does that have anything to do with the NCAA?

    Beat me to it

You're telling me that kid on academic scholarship is pulling in enough to pay tuition and have tens of thousands extra in his/her pocket? Nope, this is different.

I'm curious how the pay to a star 5-star that plays like a 5-star compares to the walk-on or 3-star that ends up being a first round NFL pick; are all student athletes going to be paid the same?

And if they start paying these guys I'd rather universities just drop the sport and college football become minor league football

No. Because that’s not how supply and demand works. They’re being paid for their likeness. Whether that’s a YouTube page, a sponsorship from a car wash, local commercials...whatever. The more popular players will get more endorsements/more money for those endorsements. Life isn’t fair. Rodrigo Blankenship is a walk on kicker, and I guarantee you he’d have as many endorsements as anyone else
    On the UGA team.

As for having more money blah blah blah - yea, I’m sure some of those kids on academic scholarship have plenty of money. It may be mommy and daddy’s money, but they have plenty of money. Want to get paid like a player? Go play a sport.

It’d still come down to recruiting. So offering scholarships might give an edge.

Otherwise I agree. Give those scholarships to other sports.

College football is proven to be a total drain on most college sports programs.

There are some programs who make it work or are even able to pay for itself but mostly a money sink.

I disagree with this logic. The players make money off endorsements. Its only going to be a handful of kids like Justin Fields or Jerry Judy or Hurts making real money off endorsements. I used to tutor some of the guys at UW, and I kid you not, these guys were owned by the University for 14 hours a day seven days a week all four seasons of the year. They dont get a "scholarship", they get a fake degree while the universities make hundreds of millions of dollars in endorsements off them.

I'm going to go even further. These kids deserve a 401k that the University maxes out for them, free health care while enrolled, a living stipend around 50k a year plus all the training amenities and free housing/meals, and they deserve a second free undergraduate degree or graduate degree so once they get done bashing their heads in and dont make it to the NFL they can at least return to college and get a real education.

Also, we all know college is massively over priced. Its increased by almost 4000% over the last 30 years, so when people like to say these guys are getting a "$200,000" education for free, we all know its a lie because college should cost around 10k a year or less. Its only a matter of time before the system falls apart.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here...

But, if you are saying that football teams cost other sports programs money at the same school.....that's gonna be a no from me.

Football income at every institution typically covers the costs and more of every other sport at that institution. That's typically why when a football team does well, the other sports programs start competing and doing well also.

Maybe successful football programs. For the other 90% they don’t. They are a drain on the athletic program typically.

At least this was true when I was in school studying the subject almost 20 years ago. Now with all the conference channels I'm sure they’re starting to make some money there.

If you run down this list, you'll see that the costs associated with "other" sports, both men's and women are the real drain on costs.

Football isnt a drain, unless you are simply not generating income like you should be.

Interesting finding from this article, Ohio State is almost break even on the football side....yet UCF is profiting.

I can only imagine what kind of losses smaller schools with a mostly local fan base like UC Davis have.

    Interesting article, thanks for sharing.

This is why teams like Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and others pay small schools millions of dollars to schedule them.

In the case of Tennessee, they not only pay them, they even lose to them. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

so seriously I recall 1 time in the last however many years LSU played at 11am, that was against syracuse a few years ago.

just read LSU vs Miss St will be at 11am now, and that will be the 3rd game this season.

I guess cry baby Saban got his way, or paid somebody enough...

edit: LSU played Florida at home in 2016 at 11am. when that happened it was the first home game at 11am since 1989
