Should i buy an MT Tacoma?

Unfortunately mine’s been out of commission for 10 years - but i keep it around for that inevitable “someday”

 

I mean yeah it came out of the factory in 1990 as a County haha, but I don't think many of those extra luxury features are left at this point. It's been a trail rig for at least the year I've had it and the ~6 years the PO had it so it's beat to hell both inside and out but has been pretty well looked after mechanically. I honestly love it that way, just the look of the most expensive luxury SUV money could buy 30 years ago that's been used and abused to its full potential. If I had unlimited money to spend on it I'd give it the works mechanically; Freshly remanufactured and top-hatted 4.6, LT230 swap, manual swap from a Disco, HD axles, lockers, armor, a balance of interior updates to make it more comfortable without losing all the petina and leave the exterior exactly as dented, scratched and faded as it is.

Get on it bud!! The longer it sits the longer the list gets. These things like to be driven, on the extreme ends I've had phases where I only drove it on a monthly basis or so and I seemed to find something wrong almost every time it left the garage, and this past summer I found myself in the habit of more or less daily driving it instead of my Taco, on top of it getting most of the off road and adventure duties and that clogged fuel pump which occurred in the first couple weeks of that was the only issue over 3 months and 6,000 miles. What's keeping yours off the road??

ADDENDUM: I just bought this awesome dog trailer for Bentley at Walmart, so I'm actually FOS also...

 

No oil pressure — cam & lifters ate each other and that metal went everywhere.
As i was a teenager at the time, didn’t have the cash to fix it. Now? No time — though i could have had it fixed for much less than this brand new taco cost me....

I had a disco w/ the lt230 - personally
I prefer the viscous coupling of the borg-warner

 

I have actually been very pleased with the Borg-Warner but sooner or later I am going to end up with an LT230, probably pretty soon.

BWs do fail eventually as the viscous coupler wears out and I'm in the mileage range most seem to go. They can also have issues with the chain stretching and jumping, while the LT230 is pretty much bombproof. If I end up saving up the cash to build it exactly how I want it, Ashcroft Transmissions makes an LT230 with a limited slip carrier in the center diff which is the best of both worlds, otherwise an LT230 out of a Disco is much cheaper and easier to find and gives me one less thing that could break on me in the middle of nowhere.

 

MT costs less and performs great

 

Please do yourself a favor and get the manual - It is night and day better in these trucks. Then again, if you don't REALLY need a truck, I can't say enough good things about the manual Subaru Foresters especially in winter weather - I drove one b4 my Taco and it was damn-near as capable with way better gas mileage and handling.

 

I think the old 4.0 liter has more balls then the new 3.5 liter. So if you want it to be snappier go with the manual trans

 

Ive had both. Currently in a M/T. Much better performance and more enjoyable drive.

The AT always had a mind of its own shifted alot and was annoying. MT puts me in control and more connected with the truck. If you know how to drive a MT properly its better in every situation IMO.
