How is everyone successfully prepping a deck for stain? Drum sander for a day?

    Pressure wash ftw

Or scrub it with deck cleaner

I wouldn’t sand unless it’s super messed up

Also would be difficult to run a drum sander without hitting nails and screws :)

Think stain will take on scrubbing-power washing alone?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
X2 That deck will clean right up with a pressure washer.

Doesn’t look like there’d be much in the way of stain absorption such as old paint or stain.
Seems to be mostly algae on a decent surface
The pressure washer washer should clean that right up
    Beware gouging lol

After you power wash, use a wood brightener, it really helps with uniform stain absorption. I like a cleaner and brightener pack made by a company called restore a deck. Its good stuff.

After I (mostly) finished the bedroom in prep for my other half coming home Saturday I started in on converting a bedroom into my office.

Put the bedroom set on Craigslist and sold it the next day. Yesterday I painted one wall to match the others, hung curtain rod/curtains today and am getting ready to mount a TV on the wall above the desk. It will be on an articulating arm and also be my second computer monitor. When I remodeled our bedroom, just on the other side of the desk wall, I ran power, rj45 and HDMI up the wall for the office. It will all be behind the monitor so no hanging wires.

The tape on the floor in front of the window is where the 1960's mid century modern console stereo I'm getting from my parents will go. I have a MCM cabinet that will go next to the desk which will hold an AVR reciever, USFF computer, 8 port switch and other misc stuff. To the right will be a small love seat, also MCM, so I can hide out and watch whatever the hell I want to watch.

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
You need to sand to get rid of any finish/stain/poly that was on there before, otherwise the new stain will not penetrate.

As stated, that looks like it's still bare treated lumber, so a good pressure wash and let it dry. Make sure to use a good 100% oil based stain. Anything that is waterbourne or "cleans up with soapy water" isn't going to hold up. And once you put something latex based on it, you're done there's no going back.

Started the frame for our gate, measured at 1/2” out of square so we’ll call it good and weld it, we’ll plan on putting the proud side up to combat sag, total width is 10’8 1/8” and we’re trying to keep it a wheel-less design.

Amen, water based outdoor stain is a bad idea. I have used and really like Armstrong Clark deck stain. Had to have it shipped AMD it wasn't cheap but better than anything I could buy locally. I went with semi transparent and its held up great in below zero snowy new England winters and humid 100° summers. It needs power washing and a new coat next year but it's been 4 years since I did it. No peeling, cracking, flaking like you get with latex.
