I think we’re saying basically the same thing. The problem is that a lot of that cultural influence can be mitigated by the parents but they are either either so busy trying to earn a living that they don’t, or they are super hyper involved in th kids lives that the kids never get to develop a sense of individuality or experience “healthy adversity” so they don’t have a coping mechanism when they do come upon a problem that most of us from earlier generations would easily overcome on our own.

This is my opinion but one of the most harmful aspects of today’s society is the attention and importance given to children’s opinions on matters and issues they haven’t the slightest clue about, and that previously was not afforded them. Even basic rules of now antiquated politeness , such as remaining quiet when adults are speaking or referring to adults with respectful titles are no-no’s today.

Look at any prime time TV show and you’ll see how kids are portrayed as smart problem solvers while the parents - especially fathers - are portrayed as empty headed mouth breathers. WTF does a kid know about solving anything when he’s hardly had a chance to even experience anything aside from shitting on himself? That’s why you have parents to guide you. They’ve been there done that.

The whole world has been turned on it’s ass and I have no idea what it’ll take to fix it. That’s why I just try to keep to myself and just live my life as best I can. Things are going to go the way things are going to go with or without me so fuck it. Nothing I can do about it...

Yeah I mean it’s probably a pie chart of contributing factors. I’m just saying that it is indeed harder/worse now. It’s gotta be. Good parenting can fix a lot of the bullshit influence of the outside world. I wouldn’t know.

The typical shitbag in Indiana in 1940 was influenced by who? His parents. Siblings. The people in his town. A fucking sears catalog, MAYBE. I don’t even know if that was around then. The outside influence was waaaaaay smaller back then. These days, there are actual people on payroll whose job it is to influence. Trends and hype can start in one place at 6 am and be global by noon. These days, ALL the bullshit of the world is right in your front yard lol.

true that. there is a constant bombardment of influencers and targeted ads. i didn't even think of that. i had a couple guitar and skateboard catalogs. then the record store and music shops i used to hang out in with all my dipshit friends. we'd buy records, start bands, and suck. now i'm getting ads for gear i've never heard of and honestly don't give a fuck about, but there has been an instance or two where i bought something because of an ad like that. strange times, indeed.

Same. Nothing can be done. Hopefully the future generations can develop a “think for your fucking self” mindset and resist/recognize actual fake news no matter the source, how not to eat soap, the value of being (mostly) quiet and when to get loud, and probably by that time, doing vintage things like hand-framing a picture and hanging it lol

    :rofl: :rofl::rofl:

On a serious note, you guys born in the ‘50s had the fortune of being in your teens/early 20s during the “Muscle Car” era of the 60s-70s. I enjoy hearing my dad share memories of those days.

Millennials are turning out to be one of the softest generations, which is why it's somewhat insulting to be classified as such. On paper I'm included in the group, and I drive a '19.

Yeah, it's fun going to car shows and identifying the years/models correctly...amazes people. Even my oldest son sometimes forgets when I come out with some computer knowledge and I have to remind him that I was an adult when that stuff was invented.

The “traditional” family unit has been run out of town and replaced by transient “adult” figures in the lives of too many kids today.

This man speaketh the truth. Honestly I'm a little scared for what the world will look like and how to navigate it when I eventually have kids. I'm only 23...
I bristle when I see kids, toddlers even, clutching smartphones while being pushed around in a stroller or a wagon. Totally unaware of the world surrounding them. I feel like there's a lot of mental building blocks being denied there. And they often melt down if the devices are taken away. "Back in my day" if we were out in public my mom usually had books or a toy or something for us to be occupied with, use a little imagination. We'd have to behave and *gasp* learn how to interact with adults.

On a lighter note yeah. My dad was in high school in the late 70's - early 80's. I was always in awe of the muscle car stories he has. Imagine being a kid and getting a V8 hand-me-down for nearly zero money. You could roast the tires on damn near anything because everything came with a V8, and often a big-block. Of course the parents never drove em that way. He drove a Chevelle SS that I think he said came from a little old lady. Fast forward to my high school years with gas at four bucks a gallon, high insurance rates and Cash for Clunkers making used car prices spike. The high school muscle car was a rare sight indeed. I'm jealous of that crowd.

I’m jealous too! My dad has a ‘69 Chevelle sitting in his garage. It needs some mechanical repairs and bodywork. I’m hoping he’ll get it together in time for my sons to ride in it when they’re old enough to remember without having to refer to photos. If so, it will mark three generations of our family!

I think that has more to do with the condemnation of violence. Growing up as kids we got into fights, we beat eachother up over dumb stuff but as long as it didnt go to far it wasnt a big deal. It was just kids working out their differences. Even hockey still allows fights and for the most part, that fight generally resolves whatever issue or grievance there was on the ice.

Today, you can't touch anyone without the entire system coming down on your head, kids get expelled from school, people are suing each-other, etc, etc

I'm not saying I condone violence but a scrap here and there never hurt anyone, especially in controlled situations.

Yeah. We need to lighten up on the rules for scraps. Have you ever talked to a person who has never been punched in the face? They are legit the worst.

Doesn't matter how old you are, things were better when you were younger...

Because you were, you know, younger then.

Another reason might be everyone, more or less has selective memory. Most of us forget the things that weren't "memorable".

When I was a child, I remember many adults with their boring "when I was your age" stories.

Every once in a while you would talk to an adult, who would talk straight to you about how things really haven't changed that much- there were just as many lazy ass pussies around when I was kid trying to get something for nothing as there are today.

    Lol
