Ruined Rim?

Didn't bother to look on the backside of the set of rims that I bought today. Is this one with the gouge in it ruined, or can it be simply be ground out.

Won't be noticeable once installed on the truck. I wouldn't worry about it.

 

Blend out an area with a flap disc and measure the remaining thickness vs. the surrounding undamaged area.

 

This. Except use a wire cup instead of a flap disc. Flap disc may take away more than necessary, could end up needing a ton of wheel weights to balance that one.

 

My experience is a wire cup can remove loose paint and corrosion scales, but will struggle with removing the base metal. Here we have a groove made by a bad ball joint or a stone trapped between the caliper and the wheel. The idea is to blend out the groove without deepening it, to provide a more gradual transition and alleviate the stress concentration. Better to use a flap disc for it.

 

OK. how thin is too thin to use safely.

 

Depends on how hard you go off-road. Use your own judgment (say, -10% from original thickness as a rule of thumb).

As long as it holds air and can be balanced .

From the picture it does not look deep.

I have deeper gouges on the outside on some wheels .

If this is going to keep you awake nights then don`t use it

 

I would be tempted to just pretend it's not there and use them as-is. I can't imagine it would have a noticeable impact on balance or structural integrity.

 

Kinda looks like a casting imperfection that may have gotten ground down?
