I bought my truck used and did not get the key for the tailgate. I just installed a LoMax bed cover and now want to procure a key for my tailgate. I went to the dealer and they could not find the code to cut a new key for the tailgate. The even showed me the form that had the code for the doors and it said "code not found" for the tailgate.

I went to a locksmith and they said that they could take the tailgate apart and there would be a code on the lock. They could make a key from that.

Any thoughts or advice on this? Go aftermarket?

And for those that are not aware; it's a 2016, the only 3rd gen that has a separate key for the tailgate.

Similar issue in this thread. Did you search everywhere for the key? One guy found his in a bag with his jack tools:

You should be able to get the code off of the lock cylinder. Taking the cover off of the tailgate isn't difficult. It is strange
that the dealer can't help you.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
Check on the underside of the center console lid. Mine was clipped in place there when I bought it.

Here is where I found a serial number in the yellowed out area but haven't ordered my key yet.

Yes exposing the back of the cylinder and the pop and lock to the right so the tailgate can be locked with FOB.
