There's a pretty big difference between the two. Are you the type that wants to be approached when walking your dog or have people avoid you?

I personally considered a Doberman when we were looking last time, but after reading about the traits we decided it wasn't what we were after this time. Dobermans are very intelligent dogs. Having an intelligent dog sounds good in theory, but they're a lot more work. Ask yourself if you're up for it. If you put the work in on a Doberman, I'm certain it would be a fantastic dog.

My wife had a golden retriever when I met her, not very smart, but the sweetest dog I've ever been around and probably the easiest dog you could ask for to take care of. Good luck with what you decide.

The best two dogs i've ever had were Goldens. Would follow me everywhere no leash needed.

I love it! A nice mutt is the answer.
My 10 YO bully mutt fell sick mid July, and I had to put her to sleep suddenly. She was fire and ice. She was sweet as can be with my niece and nephews, but she met the front door with skepticism.

That's a shame. Breed specific legislation is a bunch of BS. I spent a few years helping out a dog rescue by taking photos regularly of the dogs that needed homes (most shelters have the worst, potato camera pictures of their animals and it doesn't help them get adopted). Anyway, easily 9/10 dogs that needed homes were of the pitbull variety. Some from some very broken homes/abusive backgrounds, was pretty sad. But I swear, the most loving and eager to please dogs I've ever known in my life were those pitbulls.

Some people are firm on thinking otherwise about them and I won't try and change someone's mind, IMO you have to experience them for yourself to see how they really are. But I never once felt afraid or threatened being around any of them.

In fact, working for that rescue did teach what the meanest, most frightening breed of all is....f***ing Chihuahuas. Those things a vicious little demon spawn. I guess they kind of have to be since it's the only real defense they have.

Anyway my vote in this poll goes toward Goldens, only because I grew up with one and miss her to this day.

A guy I used to work for had a Dobie and for some reason they couldn't get one of his ears to stick up even after multiple operations, so he always had one perfectly straight pointed ear and one floppy one, lol.

His right ear stands well after Unrolling tape, but left ear doesn’t stand as high. This process can take up to a year. Here is a pic from couple months ago

For all those with, or who wish to own, a Doberman please ensure you have the MANDATORY additional homeowner's insurance.
