What if I told you I watched a hybrid actually twist the rear tires off the wheels because... torque?

Oh, please get it right... the engine is not the hybrid, the driveline is.

I’m down with that ... but only if they put speakers in the muffler to make it sound like a big block V8 is guzzling gas while the rubber gets cheese graded

 

Look at all the members threads about terrible gas mileage, and you think you’re getting a V8 lol. These are the people that actually fill out the survey or stay on the line after to take it. And no way in hell toyota will put in a V8 in a Tacoma that would take sales from the tundra.

 

The part about the Tundra is truth. BUT: V8 could actually achieve better mpg in a Tacoma under certain applications but most buyers are just soccer dads so they fuck that up for everyone.

Edit: which is the sole reason the ridgeline is actually a thing

 

What do you have against soccer dads?
Are you able to run for 90 min and drink past last call?

 

With hybrids (about 20% assist) you just pay more to get better gas mileage. Makes no sense economically for cost and mpg, imho.

Also, most vehicles are inoperable once the $5000 hybrid battery goes dead, even though the engine and everything else still works. What a shit concept.

 

They will never put a V8 in the Tacoma. What’s more likely is a 2.5-L turbo. There is no need in the market they’re after for more than 300 HP anyway, and as said would cannibalize from the Tundra.

Hybrid especially plug-in is a good idea. Volvo has been going whole hog with that in China with their T8 platform.

There is a lot of misunderstanding of hybrids and turbos and diesel on this forum, but I ain’t got time to go into that right now. Suffice it to say that are all extremely successful for other carmakers, and if you can’t appreciate that, you’ll be stuck with NA engines which will be increasingly rare as time goes on. (Like MT probably LOL.)

Would be interesting to take a poll to see what people think the next engine(s) will be—3.5 L gas, smaller engine with hybrid or electric, or—ahem—diesel. (The diesel probably ain’t gonna happen either, sorry guys.) Toyota might do well to take a page from Ford and Volvo and offer different combinations of engines to appeal to different folks.

 

Batteries are required by law to be warrantied for 10 years 150,000 miles. A quick Google search for a Prius battery costs $2400 to $2600 which I think includes labor.

Being a larger vehicle, I imagine the Tacoma would have a larger battery or it could be smaller like that of the new Jeep.

Either way, there is a growing push to find new ways to recycle lithium batteries. Lithium is expensive and there is a ton of it that is about to be taken off the road. I have my hopes up that this will reduce the price of battery swaps similar to a core exchange.

 

All my Tacoma needs is a bit more lower end to get to 3K on the tach faster...bring it on!!

I was never a hybrid believer until my wife got her Prius V. I love that thing. It's a great appliance for getting from A to B. 45mpg and the size of a small mini van. 105k on it and not a single issue. I think the e-torque system on the Ram is pretty cool, almost like an electric supercharger. The economic benefit is unclear though.

I would gladly take a hybrid Tacoma. A good electric motor combined with the 2GR-FKS would give this truck some serious muscle for its size and help its fuel efficiency quite a bit. Fuel efficiency is really my only gripe about the Taco. I generally get between 18 and 22 mpg.

 

This will kill the manual transmission.

Toyota should turn the Tacoma into like an el Camino with a hybrid engine for all the people that want a car to drive to Starbucks and get 100 mpg but still need to be able to haul the groceries home in the bed.

Hybrids and electric are the future, and V8's are an almost dead platform. This shouldn't be confusing.

I for one can't wait for either a hybrid or electric Taco.
