its not my front im having issues with. its my rear differential. But I get what you're saying, as that why I didn't throw a locker in the front during my regear, as the front axles have a higher risk of snapping when locked.

the second time around Im looking at going with ECGS since I dont know anyone in my new area. The shop Im working with here has done gear jobs, but mostly on their race cars (dragsters). they have pulled the rear for me, and has agreed to install the rebuilt from ECGS. I need to contact ECGS and find out all the ins and outs on their warranty, before I commit to that route.

Im just lost for words at this point. needed to vent to my tacoma bothers. I research everything as much as possible before I do anything to my truck. Yes I understand i have modded it out of company specs, but hell any one who changes wheels, or even a front bumper does that. Everything I have done, has been with logic, and countless hours of research to keep my truck functional offroad, on road and to look good. But hell over half the members on TW have heavily modded their trucks, lol.
It appears Im just having bad luck. Im getting my tail kicked at work, and now i have to figure this out too.
    someone get me some cheese.

Do you have any experience with ECGS?

I have spoken with ECGS, and they are solid people on the east for this.

I am not exactly sure why your having such grief with your rear diff.

If you have a moment, jump in the 529 mega thread. There is a lot of awesome info. You might throw @JoeCOVA a message. He may be able to shine some light on your issue. He has really helped me out in a few threads and knows a lot about these trucks.

Thanks in advance Joe, for any help you might be able to assist my buddy Dan with.

That rear end should have no issues handling 35’s. Even when wheeling. Many many many people wheel hard on a stock Toyota 8in rear.

thanks JB. this thread is short, but does contain some helpful tidbits for my situation. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/factory-e-locker-problems.229593/
I understand what some of those guys are saying but I would have trouble trying to tell what is said.
I'll reach out to ECGS tomorrow and speak with them.

Anyone have tips on reducing jarring from downtravel?

I'm lifted ~2 inches on Fox 2.5" coils and 700lb springs. Dakar HD leafs in the back. Full armor, bumpers, winch, camper on back. I have JBA UCAs, but made the mistake of getting the standard travel (not LT) Fox coils.

Uptravel is fine, the coils, leaf springs, and shocks do great. On downtravel, I can feel the front end unload completely at the shock. It's bad if I'm going like 30mph offroad and hit a whoop or drop greater than a few inches.

Is there a way to convert standard to LT coils, or some sort of way to dampen downtravel?

This is the best and most chatter we've had in here in weeks.

I tagged Chris and Bob and requested that they update the photo to that one since it has all 3 generations and the old photo had been there for a while.

Pretty sure it was Josh who took it.

The look on that kids face is priceless. Someone get him a whistle!

Dude, that sucks! I hope this is the last time you have to deal with gears.

Will be interested to see how they handle it.

I agree that a 285 is a big tire, but are you saying that it is too big? I'm kind of on the fence. I want to go to that size to get a little more height, but don't know that I want that big of a tire.

    Hmm....group install....

I've heard that LT is terrible to drive on the highway, so you might want to reconsider that. Plus, you have to swap your CV shafts for 2" longer. The LT rabbit hole is deep. Fair warning.

It sounds like you have a lot of pre-load on your springs. They can't wait to decompress. I'm not sure what you could do to limit that because I doubt you want to try lowering the front. Best I can say is slow down.

Any of you guys have a local-ish whiskey recommendation?

Back in TX, there was a brand of whiskey called "TX" that was made in Fort Worth. I loved that stuff, but I'm sure that I won't be able to find it here. So figured it wouldn't hurt to see if there is something made in this area that I should try.

Is your shock not long enough or out of down travel and it fully extends prematurely? I had rear shcoks like that and they were too short so when my rear end would get some air and the rear would travel all the way down the shocks were basically acting as a limiting strap and it would be pretty jarring when they limited out. New longer shocks allowed more down travel and no more limiting so it was very smooth after.

The rear's actually great. No issues there. I think it's the front. @CowboyTaco is probably on to something about preload.

My 285s are great! I did a CMC though.

I do probably have a lot of pre-load, but I have to or my height droops, even though I have 700lb springs. Is the solution then longer springs? I definitely don't want more rate than the 700lb springs. Slowing down is an option, but the rapid decompression even occurs on speedbumps if I'm not going sloooow.

I'm not sure if the LT body that was available as an option for my coils is full LT... I think it's just an extra 1" droop, compatible with stock CVs. I definitely don't want full LT - that's nuts, too much work, and I tow on the highway, so full LT with LCAs is right out.

I may be way off base, but you may be looking for extended travel rather than LT (long travel). Very different animals. Extended travel (to my understanding) is the same coil/shock, but with a spacer removed from the shock which allows it to utilize more travel. You should be able to convert your standard travel into extended via a rebuild. @state48overland can expand on this and/or correct me where I have lead you astray.

Secondly, it sounds like you might want to replace your bump stops and/or move them for your post lift specs.

285 isn't too big for a taco. Most don't even measure to true 33" tires. I'm thinking he has some unique gremlins aloof.
