It isn't just the garage. While it is enhanced by confined spaces, it could happen anywhere. If you are sitting that exhaust is dumping under the body. There is nothing stopping it from flowing into the cab, not to mention your cab vents are at the rear of the cab in between the bed and the cab. The 4 runner has a similar issue and you will see labels stating not to operate with the window open. Having owned one, can tell you that the exhaust will flow back into the cab. The chances are you are not going to die, but if you are going to increase your chances by doing something like this, it isn't a bad idea to protect yourself with CO monitor.

Ever been stuck in a parking garage after an event or game? Traffic jams in tunnels? Other car's exhausts.

We're getting pretty far into the weeds here.

Also, just a note that the rear vents are outlets. It would be pretty hard to get any concentration going inward. About the only way that makes sense is the pulse as they are closing. The fact there is that most cars have theirs right above the exhaust. That said, I do believe there were a couple recent recalls for an SUV and a car for faulty cabin vents. The Exploder comes to mind.

I actually bought a battery powered CO detector yesterday at Home Depot because I am hearing you out and I understand what you’re saying. The problem with trying to use one inside the truck is that it needs a certain amount of air flow to be accurate. Not sure if the AC/HVAC blowing would work but I will try and report back!

If you’re keen to modify your exhaust then do a re-route at the transfer case. Having the pipe go below the case is ridiculous and easy to resolve. Perk is not sweating if you are going to crush it and you can mount a flat bash plate beneath that won’t have an awkward drop profile in it. Wanna get fancy? Add a little heat shield between the new pipe route and the electronic actuator to feel better about when you’re idling on tracks.

I’ve wheeled mine hard before and after I put the high clearance rear bumper on and the only thing that happened to the stock tip were a few scratches on the bottom as the rubber hangers flexed and it was temporarily pushed up by the object I was driving over.

Another possible issue is that some states safety inspections may issue a defect citation because the exhaust no longer exits past the perimeter of the car.

    *Your mileage may vary.

Probably the longest thread for a non issue every posted to TW.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with that.

I know that in GA you used to fail inspection. Had to put a 6" extension on once because of this. o_O

Never had any issue of exhaust entering the cabin and this set up has been on my Camaro for 20 years

I cut mine and added a turn down before the axle. No problems with it. You'll get a face full of fumes when hooking up a trailer though.

What diff armor is that? Looks like you have the E-locker like I do, I've been looking for one that fits the 8 inch rear end with E-locker and can't seem to find one.

Measure where you're cutting the exhaust prior to dropping your spare tire. I dumped mine after the axle, turns out 1 year later the exhaust burned through the spare tire to the steel belts rendering it useless. I welded a bit more onto it just to pass the new spare. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem, but I have! Otherwise, no issues.

What are the 2 cables running along the top of the axle? My turn down pipe points at those a little
should I be concerned about damage/melting?

That's your ABS line and your brake line. To be safe, I would make sure your exhaust is pointed away from that but honestly, it probably won't cause any damage to it.

just rechecked it, it faces them. the only way to do anything is to get a new pipe unless there's
something I can shield them with....or just not worry about it?

Turn the truck on and go back there and stick your hand where you're worried about. Ge an idea for the temp. If its bad, get a shop to weld in a down pipe right off the muffler. You're probably fine though.

You can get hi temp braided wire sleeving that's good up to 2k deg from places like Summit or JEGS

    thanks

I'll do that. If it worries me I'll just pop the pipe off and cut some off at the muffler side so it turns
down right in front of the axle and doesn't heat that 2 lines.

Sorry, but you don't. Yours is cut after the axle. Mine is before:

    IMG_20190928_104446.jpg

Why retain the hump over the axle, IMO?

Did the sound change dramatically when you chopped that much off?
