True...I have NO PROBLEM at all paying taxes. We all should and most do. I just don't want greedy politicians (from either party) getting to decide how much...it's too much power, and if you always target the rich, it's easier to get the majority on your side (since most of us are not rich).

1/2 of someone's money is getting to be too much.

good questions but IMO I don't think there is a simple answer. some corporations will continue to go overseas putting profit ahead of everything else. There are companies today that find a better balance and remain profitable and continue to grow. I also think our government needs to do everything to make it more attractive to do more business here rather than outsourcing. Some outsourcing is OK...we can't be the experts or most cost-effective in everything...that is why we have trade.

I'd say it's a mixed bag with return on investment and maximizing profits. I will say that the service sector as is stands today cannot sustain this country forever. Short term yes, but in the long term we simply have to make tangible goods. WE need manufacturing to return here. A country that produces nothing for it's population will die. The green jobs thing on paper looks great but what good is it if China manufactures all the solar panels? We used to build great things that made and still make us proud. Grandparents boasted of their achievements. It makes me sad to think the only thing we do today is push buttons.

My best friend said today he can't get anyone to work on his home. It has wood rot on the outside. Got 4 bids and he's willing to pay whatever as he has the money. No one wants to drive out and do it. What does that say for us??

The masters love it when the slaves grant them tax breaks. In the meantime, since Reagan (who repealed progressive tax brackets) the middle class has lost 12% of it's members, with 2/3 of those joining the lower class and 1/3 joining the wealthy.

I can look up the 1987 tax table and see that progressive taxes were in force. If the middle class lost 12% post the link as to why? Retirement perhaps?? As for a 1/3 becoming wealthy whats the problem?

    You can.

As far as paying down debt, we can all send them a check - they'll take it.

    Regarding helping the less fortunate...

It is my belief that less fortunate children are helped much more by direct injection or participation - And if it matters, I dedicated the better part of a year to helping the homeless and those less fortunate, if it matters.

I volunteered with the Make A Wish organization for more than 5 years as a wish granter and also as a public speaker to bring on new donations. I don't know how much I would have been taxed in order to get the same amount done.

I have also paid for a number of people's college education that were unrelated to me but were motivated. I did that with no expectations other than that it was not going to be wasted.

Would you like the child you make reference to, to get $1 for each dollar you 'donate' or would you rather use a less efficient mechanism that delivers a fraction of the money?

For me the government has some good intent but execution downright sucks and throws more money away than it get's to those 'good causes.'

My biggest challenge with this whole thing - I really don't care how much people are taxed as much as I am very disgruntled when a bunch of white shoe wearing politicians are making deals with our money and tell the entire US what their money should be spent on. Many think their politicians know best - I don't think so. I think when people are spiritually whole, they help people. The government is not a spiritually whole entity.

Well, I don't get to make that call, but if you don't want to help out your fellow countrymen that's your discretion, I guess. Technically, you don't have to pay taxes, you will just have to do a little community service at your friendly local federal prison. I think we as Americans need to have a little more sense of community as a society.

I would love to see someone dub that speech exchanging the words 'greed' with 'motivation.' :)

...or maybe dub it with the words "greed towards your neighbors' money is good!"

If that is truly the state of your finances then you are not one of the uber rich we are talking about. Still , just imagine what some of us go through just to get by. I have worked hard, full time my whole life - straight out of high school because in 1968 (when I graduated high school). it was not possible for everyone to attend college. As it is now even though I am a kidney dialysis patient, qualify for disability payments and should not be working, I still must work full time to get by. I am now at the point where I am considering buying a small travel trailer and living in it because in the last few years all of my savings have gone down the shitter just to stay in an 800 square foot house. Oh, and you spoke of your retirement plan, my retirement plan has been completely depleted just to get by. I am 60 years old with multiple disabilities but I can't see a day where I won't have to go to work, I will die on the job.

Unless you are on the internet in the library and you won your truck in a raffle, there are plenty of people in a worse position than you in this country. So why can't you give more? I mean you might have to sell your truck and disconnect your computer but why not? You see, it's the same thing you're asking me to do. I'd have to give something up that we have worked for so turnabout is fair play..........right?

My truck is paid for out of my now depleted savings so that I will have something to drive to work, I was planning ahead. As for my internet and computer use, I only have dial up service because I can't afford broadband and my computer I assembled from used parts because I can't afford to purchase one. And I do contribute to the less fortunate. Everytime I do my grocery shopping I donate a few bucks to the local food bank (it's charged to my debit card) because I foresee a time when I wil be in the same boat as the homeless that need those services. I also give money that I can't afford to people (not obvious junkies or alcoholics) on street corners. DO YOU?
