Anyone ever use this planer before?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I'd spend the extra couple bucks on a different brand. The gears and motors are weak. WEN is about a half a step higher than Harbor Freight.

Just as a follow up for anyone that is interested. Went to my local service center, explained my situation. He asked for my address, walked into the back room. Came back out in five minutes, handed me warranty paperwork, and told me a new one would be at my door in 2-3 days. Sure enough, 2 days later, it showed up! Very pleased with the whole process.

Dewalt and Ridgid planners get good reviews. I got the Ridgid and love it. It’s one of those tools you’re better off saving to get something better.

edit; just seen Oahu, yeah plus 100% avoid shipping. Even Amazon was retarded shipping there.

Or look on FB marketplace, Craigslist, etc. Often planers are purchased with the intention of being used but rarely are they used all that much so you can sometimes get one that is essentially new for the price of a used.

Very true. I get caught up forgetting how many more options there are in urban areas. Stuff that usually pop up here are beat to hell, if you see any postings.

Edit; another point to make, @Jultepod how long do you plan to stay in? Every PCS is going to risk beating your big tools up. That was a big factor for me in really only having the TS until I retired.

@shane100700 fortunately I have Amazon prime so it would be free shipping plus homedepot would ship it to their store for free and give me my 10% off.
I have checked FB and CL but only things that come up are hand planers. Was gonna get it for money making projects on the side. Getting burnt out on these cornhole boards everyone wants. I know the dewalt 735 is the best bench top one on the market after watching a bunch of reviews.
I'm planning on staying in another 15 years. So its gonna be moving around quite a bit. Knock on wood I have been vary fortunate and nothing of mine has broken in a PCS yet.
Was looking at that planer just because it was ok and it was reasonably priced. Also like you guys said about them usually just sitting there. I'm not sure how much I'll use it until I get it. So kinda hard to drop $5-600 on a dewalt one.

Makes sense. I don’t think I had prime when I was there so wasn’t sure if it applied to HI. I do remember they didn’t seem to have much on fb or CL.

So if it’s primarily for corn hole and side gig stuff, what’s your needs? A planer is really pretty specialized, do you already have the basic big tools?

That planer looks to be about $350ish on Amazon, I might just save another $100 and get Ridgid or a Delta for similar price. WEN actually gets decent reviews for what they are but planers can be temperamental and it would get old quick if you end up with too much snipe.

Yah we still get prime out here. Just cant ship spray paint and stuff. I wont use the planer on cornhole boards. Going to use it on wine holders, table tops, and cutting boards.

Already have a router, sander, miter saw, table saw, drill, air compressor, shop vac. Ect. Jointer and planer were next on my list.

The wen planer is 280 on homedepot.com so possibly less with the discount.

Ok, that all makes sense then. I will say anything over the planner size you pretty much need to hand plane, sand or use a router sled.

Back to the original question then: I have not used WEN products but they seem to get decent reviews. I’ve eyeballed the brand for awhile but then get concerned and just get a bigger name brand. Lots of nice to haves with some of the others though. Also make sure to check price and availability of replacement blades. Or if they can be resharpened.

Yah I was looking at attempting a farmhouse table. Figured the planer would make it easier. Especially compared to the router sled. Huh maybe I need to work one more skills before jumping into getting a bench top planer

Yeah I kinda thought the same thing. I got mine to build a cheap SYP work bench. It worked great on the three slabs but the final glue up made me break out the belt sander. Eventually I’ll run a router sled over it but for now it works. If you look closely you can see the imperfections and even glue where the stain didn’t take all the way. I did the entire shop at the same time so got burnt out. It’s flat enough but needs more work looks wise.

Might be worth your time for a second look at a router sled and jointer jig for the TS.

Good time to jump in here. Lurking the thread for a while. Working on a small kitchen table for friends. Nothing special. 60x30 out of pine 2x8s. Used an old joiner today but had a hard time getting nice square edges. Any tips? Gonna look more into this router sled people are mentioning. Slowly learning and have access to a fairly decent collection of tools. Thanks!

Square edges to each board, the entire table as a whole?

Square edges on each individual board. After running them through the joiner, it seemed like one would be a little off or the center would be a little high. I'm assuming it's user error and I am just not running them up against the fence well enough but figured people would have tips or tricks.

Ill leave that for a jointer guru.

I use a jointer jig on the TS for short edges and planer for top and bottom.

Sounds like your fence is not square to your table. Just get a GOOD pocket square to verify everything. Also check your blades to make sure they are not worn more to the inside against the fence. I have a 6" Delta joiner that I check each time I take it out before using it. Good Luck.

I think that might be a better idea for me starting out.

After checking with a pocket square, the fence looks square. I really think it was me not holding the board up tight against the fence causing the slight difference in angle. Are you pressing down against the board and well as holding the board in against the fence?

I’d probably just buy a bunch of 2x4s and practice with it.

I don’t have one mostly because of space and cost. I think there are a lot of work arounds for a jointer, as long as you’re aware of the limitations of those work arounds.
