I've never really noticed it until today but when the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd, it feels normal (~500 rpm drop), but then 2nd to 3rd feels like two half-shifts.. one ~250 rpm drop, then another ~250 rpm drop.

Anyone know why it does this? At first I was thinking the two half-shifts are not really two half-shifts but rather one actual shift and the other the torque converter locking up.

I believe that is the slip-lock on the TC and this is from 3rd to 4th. Not normal if this is happening between 2nd and 3rd. 4th is always a 1:1 hook up to the engine and toyota does a slip-lock before locking to keep from lugging.

Edit: check your tranny fluid level. My 19 was almost a half quart low.

Sounds like the torque converter is locking up. Normal. Sometimes the torque converter will unlock for increased torque without needing to downshift a complete gear.

I have noticed this on my 2018 too. 1st normal. 2nd to 3rd seems like a quick shift. This would probably be fixed by an OVTune I'm guessing?!

Not really an annoyance to me, just curious what it is as its different than the rest of the shifts.

Going to try shifting manually in sport mode to see if it still does it.

    S3 or below eliminates it.

I noticed today how hard my truck shifts from park to reverse. It seems overly loud and feels like it’s “unjamming” from park. Anyone else notice this too?

My shifter has that feeling as well, even before and after the most recent shift TSB. Been that way since new. No sound. I can feel the trans smoothly get into reverse from park, but the levers action could be smoother. “Unjamming” is an accurate way of putting it.

Glad to know it’s not just me. I guess I’ll live with it as it seems to smoothly transition as you said. I still have a long way to go on my warranty so I’ll keep my eye on it. I have been looking up the transmission problem everyone talks about. All I can gather is it hunts for gears and whatnot. Anyway, what does the dealer do when you take it in and tell him to fix it? And what exactly do you say to request it? I’m not even sure I need it lol but if it needs to be done id like to have it done.

Since you have a 2019, it should be up to date from the factory. The gear hunting is not really a problem that develops over time, the transmission does shift more than most because extra OD gear and MPGs. Some people are fine with it since it’s how it’s designed to work from a reputable transmission mfg, others are bothered by it because it does feel different than a lot of other vehicles. I think my truck drives great, personally. If you like how yours drives right now you should be all good.

I bought a 2003 Ram, with the Hemi of course, and drove it up until a few months ago before I sold it. So I’m used to one particular vehicle with a lot more power. Lol It does leave a little to be desired as far as how hard I have to give it throttle to get it up to speed but it seems to shift fine as far as I’m concerned. It just shifts in low rpms which for me is fine , coming from 12 MPG. I’m averaging great fuel economy. I’m very happy with it and glad to have joined the Taco family. I don’t think I’d be happier with anything else. But thanks a lot bud. I really appreciate it.

So it only does it in drive, not sport mode or if using ECT. Feeling good about that... probably just strange shifting or TC logic in drive mode.

It's bugging me now. I want to know why it only does it in drive, lol.

Do you know what gear these 6-spd trannys lockup in?

edit: I think im onto something here... not the same truck, but a TC locking in 3rd gear for a 6-spd tranny is not uncommon.

Someone already mentioned it; I think what you're experiencing is 'flex lockup'(a.k.a. half lockup, partial lockup, slip lockup'). There's a clutch in there.

When I say S3, I mean, don't have it in S4, S5 or S6 and expect it to not lockup(full or partial).

That's what's cool about the Shiftsense...
It doesn't 'hang out' in the higher gears.
By the time it gets to the higher gears, vehicle speed lessens the lockup issues.

    Awesome, thanks for that info.

Just to be clear, it seems like it's locking up (or slip locking) immediately after or during the shift into 3rd gear. This is normal?

Any time man. The power is there when it’s needed. Don’t be afraid of RPMs! This engine is down tuned for reliability.
