I supposedly had a shop replace my front rotors and pads, but now that I am installing my lift and rack bushings and have taken the wheels off myself, I see that my rotors have quite a bit of surface rust.

I live in Houston, where it's quite humid, but it looks to me like the shop just resurfaced the rotors and charged me for new ones. I don't think that much rust could accumulate in 3 months... What do you guys think?

I think your right! How long ago did they change them out? I had mine done and you can tell that they are new looking as compared to yours which look like the originals to me,I bet if confront them theyll back out and say that the old rotors were good we checked them and left them on,and charged you by mistake. If they say we replaced them ask for the purchase receipt or find out where they got the rotors fromand contact the parts place they should have records on what was sold to who on what date I think. They look old to me.

With the humidity and all of the rain we have had the past month it is possible. I replaced the rotors on my wife's Murano and they rusted pretty quick as well.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Looks like they are just resurfaced to me. It is pretty damn humid down there, but that looks a little too excessive.

THats possible too it depends on how long ago he supposely changed them out, there seems to be too much rust in the groove area thats heavly rusted looking, the rotor surface itself rusts thru rain humidity,Id check out the paper trail to see if they are new.Alot of shisters will do this and never think the owner will know.

Actually they look pretty new. Do you have a shot looking down through the cooling fins?

I think it's been about 3 months. They look like the originals to me as well. Surface rust I could maybe understand, but there's rust on the hub from under the wheel hub. Although the wheel is aluminum and the rotors are steel, so that would make the steel rust faster I suppose...

I think the easiest way to check is to measure the wear. What thickness should a new rotor be? I can throw a caliper on mine and see what they're at. If it's low, obviously these are the originals.

I just don't buy it. It's too much. I have a 1995 VW gti that is my track toy. It just sits under my carport every day during the week. Only gets taken out on weekends. I replaced the rotors on that car about 8 months ago and they are squeaky clean compared to this. Now, maybe they're higher quality than the toyota units, but still...

Do anybody know the stock width of the front rotors? I'd say get that, then measure yours. If there's a significant difference (yours thinner than stock) you just might have a case against them.

i'm guessing they used cheap chinese rotors...those rust alot faster than good german ones (i'm coming from the VW world)

I think thickness is 22mm new? And minimum runout is 20mm? I think I checked mine on my 2004 with a small ruler its tough to guage cause millimeters are such small increments, thats why the shisters think they can pull off this crap,OE rotors hold up really well and think that owners wont notice a thing,I think they were resurfaced at best, maybe not even. Its best to confront them on it if they charged for new rotors thats a couple 2 hundred bucks?

This is what I think too. The only way to be sure.

Am I operating on a false assumption here? On my VW, the rotor and hub are the same piece. Is the hub separate on the toyota?

Is the red circle part of the blue, or are they separate?

I'm leery of using rust as an age indicator. My first guess would be that they used an aftermarket part that's made of a lower grade steel that rusts faster.

ok, there's no effing way then that these are new. I could maybe buy it if the rotor and hub were separate pieces, the hub being original and the rotor being new, but subject to high Houston humidity. They pulled one over on me. fuck.

I'll have to check my receipt when I get home tonight and figure out what I want to do.

This just really blows. I researched all the independant Toyota shops in town to find these guys. They came HIGHLY recommended. I talked with the guy at length, he was super cool. Showed me his trans-am drag car, shot the shit. He seemed straight up. Told me not to worry about flushing the tranny fluid, etc as it seemed very clean... I just don't get it.

Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe he mi-interpreted what I told him to do? But I paid like $400 with parts and labor. There's no way that could be reasonable for a resurface job!

Doesnt look new to me.....Best way would be to measure the thckness of the rotor.

They could be new and just really really low quality parts. If it was a crappy part to begin with, I could see it rusting out quicker than you'd expect. Either way I'd say you got screwed, either through the shop providing sub-standard parts or resurfacing the rotors instead of providing new.

I will definitely measure before I confront. So are we agreed that the new thickness should be about 22mm?
