    Hey guys,

I went and looked at this truck today. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/784436623/overview/ . its a 2004 4x4 DB with a cap. no apparent body rust, 160k miles and a cap is included. single owner as well. Went to the dealership today and had a chance to test drive it. I have no experience with these truck, so the ride did seem "clunky" but nothing felt off persay. upon start up, the engine made I could hear a very slight whine coming from the engine, but this could be normal. could not hear the whine while driving the truck tho. Come to find out that the dealership had just repalced the entire frame of the truck under the toyota warranty. in addition they put in another 2k in repairs including replacing the water pump and the front left break caliper.

Only potential red flags I've seen are on the carfaxs showing that the orginal owner replaced his timing belt at 130k,149k, and 157k which seems wierd.

dealer wants 12.6k including plates and registration.

Price isn't really the concern for me, I just don't want to buy something that is going to die on me.

    whats you're opinions?

    Thank you,

    -JF

That depends. Do you have 12 grand to spend? Lol

The timing belt thing is odd, but its not like carfax is infallible. Easily could be a mistake. Could be he 5e old owener is a moron and kept i stalling the, wrong, lol.

The 3.4L motors are non interference motors, so worst case scenario if the belt lets go is it stalls and you get a tow somewhere.

But yeah, that looks like a nice truck, and if you don’t buy it, there are probably 100 people on this forum who’d throw cash at it in a heartbeat.

Sonce they already replaced the frame, I would take a good look at *everything* else. Wjile the frames get the brunt of the rust issue, there is likely to be rust elsewhere, too. The next step is to keep up on rust prevention.

We look forward to pics of it when you bring it home!

Oh god no. 300k isn’t much of a concern....

Not unusual for these things to go 500k when taken care of.

160k takes this forum from 6 to midnight! I bought mine with 260k and have had it for a year with no major issues so far

    Carfax is overpriced toilet paper.
160k on any modern engine is no big deal. ive got close to 300 on my 01 sprt trac which jsnt exactly a dream engine.
Take it to an independant mechanic for an inspection.
12.5 is overpriced. It's not massively over but it is about a grand high.

Added repairs don't add value. A correctly functioning vehicle is worth 10k. One that requires 2k in repair is an 8k vehicle. Once the repair is done it is a 10k vehicle, not a 12. Don't fall for that trap.

@Fisherjm4 , Price is a little high, but milage is nothing to worry about, as long as it's been taken care of. Like the above posters commented, these trucks can go forever if you keep critical parts replaced, ie water pump, idler pulleys, tensioner, timing belt, oil changes. Other than those, you can expect the usual, batteries, tires, brakes. New Frame is nice, but you also need to check when the lower ball joints have been replaced. Those are the achilles heel on these trucks. Offer them 11k cash, but if you want it, buy it, they don't sit on the dealership lots for very long.

I would also take into consideration the fact that a Toyota dealer is selling it.
I would pay a lilltle extra buying it from them over a truck found on craigslist.
My guess is that the dealer tech already checked ot out. If they seen anything questionable it got fixed or the truck would have got sent to the auction or wholesaled off to a small used car dealer.
My quess is that a new car dealer doesn't want to put their reputation on the line for a 15 year old truck if they dont feel comfortable selling it.

How long has it been on the lot? My truck was selling for 10k and I offered 7k plus fees after it had been out for about 2 weeks. 02 xtracab, v6, off road package, MT, 237k.

I agree, it can be worth it to pay a little more for a truck at a Toyota dealer. Private party trucks in good condition in my area tend to go for 10k+ so I got a decent deal.

Correction. You spelled never wrong. The correct spelling would be "Never offer cash."

Unless what you were trying to say is "I have too much money and insist I pay more so I can get rid of some of it." Then your spelling was correct. But its probably a regional thing like saying pop vs soda.
